Work phone calls when on vacation or out sick
Is your employer allowed to call you and/ or, require you to check email when you're out sick or on vacation?

Is he allowed by me? Sure. He calls me any time: when I'm sick, on vacation, at the weekends. I have a BB, so I'm always in contact, but I even have my parents number in Ireland in his address book so he can call me when I'm there.

We aren't required to check our emails but we do have access at home and do so usually 1x/day in case there's anything urgent.
Sure my boss is allowed to call me, we even have each other's cell phone numbers, but in my 6 years in this job it's never happened.

when I'm on vacation I check my berry once a day.
Unless it's urgent I don't respond.

They call sometimes if it's a serious issue they need clarification on.
I refuse to buy a crackberry though. I just don't want to be "that connected". And even though we carry cell phones for work, I usually screen most of my calls, and refuse to pick it up if I am driving during business hours.
I feel that it's very important to create boundaries with my clients as a social worker............even moreso with colleagues.

Allowed to... but I'm also allowed to not pick up lol Thankfully I've never had a job where they can't live without me for a day or two.

we're not required to respond to work emails or phone calls when we're out. but i still do unless im away on vacation.

DH gets bombarded with something work related 360/365 days out of the year. I'm used to it. I have to say a major perk of going to MILs is that she's in the middle of nowhere and there isn't cell coverage!

My boss *has* all my contact info, and I do check in while I'm sick, but he knows, and I know that vacation is MY time. I have caller-ID, and I use it....   He's actually never called my during a vacation, though. He's really good about respecting people's personal time.
