How do you feel about euthanasia?

As some of you know, my 99 year old grandmother has been diagnosed with cancer. It is on her spine and lungs, and she is in a great deal of pain. My dad (who is extremely conservative) and I got into a conversation about euthanasia. Even though it goes against our religion, we both feel that someone in my grandmothers state should be able to choose to die if she wants to. She has repeatedly stated that she wants to die already, instead of continuing to be in pain.

Do you think euthanasia should be legal? After seeing my grandmother suffer, I have to say yes. Chat Icon

I don't know..I flip flop back and forth on this issue

I watched my aunt suffer. Watched her slowly suffocate. It was sooo terrible and prayed that her suffering would end.

BUT i guess it also scares me to have it legalized. Trying to come up with just WHO and WHEN this should be allowed is scary for me.

I know..I feel the same way. It would be very difficult to determine who really is sick enough and in pain enough to be "allowed" to die.

I've always been very back and forth on the issue, but right now I wish my grandmother didn't have to suffer.

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

I have watched both my great grandmothers waste away and a friend die of leukemia. I think that every individual should have the right to choose their own destiny. Who am I to decide that someone who wants to go must live?

I am completely for it. Honestly, I don't think it should be illegal for me to decide when to leave this earth.
I did a report on "Dr. Death" when I was a sophomore in high school and I whole heartedly agree with his work.

I'm surprised by this. I don't know why...perhaps because I remember you being so in favor of letting T. Shiavo pass.

i agree. and i also dont think *I* (or any politician) should be the one that decides if someone else should be 'Allowed' to die. Chat Icon

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

I have this feeling that if it is legalized...

it WILL BE the politicians who decide WHO gets to do it and WHEN.
And how anyone does that is beyond me.

I do not believe this will ever just be allowed. That if anyone feels like ending their life they can go to a doctor and get a pill. So that means there will be regulations...

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

I am for it...and I think if people made living wills that would be a way to make it known their intentions...such as they reserve the right to take drastic measures to end their suffering if it is neccesary.

I think a lot of these cases involve people still CAPABLE of making that decision...Dr. Kovorkian( sp?) usually worked with people suffering from terminal illness but still having their facilities and understanding of what would happen.

If I can still think clearly , I should be able to make my own decision ya know?

I agree with it. But before it was legalized, very specific parameters would have to be in place, I feel.

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

I am for it, if one is is so much pain, no one should be allowed to say sorry but your going to have to suffer. I mean seriously wouldnt be better to have someone just take a pill or injection and be over with? Then have the sit there in pain everyday wishing they were dead.

Yes. My Great-Aunt passed away from lung cancer and she lived with us with hospice care. Her pain, her cries, her pleas with G-d to take her were heartbreaking and painful. No one deserves to suffer from such pain.

Absolutely ... a living will would definately be needed .. this way it is not up to a politician to decide..... I mean when animals are woulnded beyond repair or are terminally ill we out them down to end there suffering ... why not humans.

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

I believe that people who are terminally ill with no hope of recovery, and who are evaluated by psychiatrists to show that they are of sound mind and not just suffering from depression that could be treated, should have the right to decide for themselves what they want to do.

The closest thing we have to this right now is a DNR and living will, and IMO, in many cases this is the most humane thing to do for someone who is at the end of life.

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

Jackie, I am very sorry about your grandmother.

As to your question, however, I am for euthanasia, when the person in question has requested it in some form or another.

I don't understand, however, this magical line that says DNR is okay but Euthanasia is not. In either case you are stopping treatment.

Not necessarily. This all depends on what the family or the person through a living will decides what measures they want. A DNR only means that if the person goes into cardiac arrest that CPR will not be performed. It does not mean that you are totally withholding treatment. When someone is DNR and is not doing well, there are then decisions made about what sort of treatment you will do for this person. For example, do they want to be placed on a ventilator? Do they want a feeding tube? Discontinue all medications except pain meds? Give IV fluids or dont? In NY, there is a seperate part from the DNR which can be signed which is a DNI (do not intubate). Sometimes the person decides that they do not want CPR performed but will agree to be placed on a ventilator if need be. The level of care for a dying person is complex, and that is why I encourage everyone to have a discussion with thier family and let them know what you would want. It is very difficult in this type of situation to make the decision to withhold treatment, but knowing what the persons wishes are will make it easier on everyone if god forbid they ever have to make the decision.

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

Yes i do think it should be legal. If our cats or dogs are suffering, we can put them out of their misery but if Grandma or Dad is suffereing...we must keep them alive, even if its the worst thing to do!!! Chat Icon

Re: How do you feel about euthanasia?

I feel each person should have the final say for their own lives.

A living will is an important thing to have. DH and I even talked about drawing one up for us. Not a "romantic" topic, but it's important, because "you never know."

My prayers are with you and your family Jackie.
