Union question - how many non-English speaking kids can I have in one class?

1/3 of my class now is non-English speaking. It's absolutely terrible. And I don't have the ESL teacher in my class pushing in. I'm by myself.

This isn't helping the kids OR me.

There HAS to be something against this....this is BEYOND differentiating. I have 5 who ONLY speak Arabic...and it seems like everyday we're getting another student.......

As far as I know, you can have a class full on non-English speakers. Keep in mind some of them might not even labeled as ESL. We never get the push in for math classes either, only SS and English.

Ask your supervisor. Their parents should have filled out a home language survey and the kids sould have been administed a LAB test. The powers that be need to determine if the kids are entitled to ESL and then start servicing them. From what I know they could be entitled to up to 10 periods of ESL a week. Just be prepared that many schools in the city are having the ESL teachers push in now. I recommend Starfall for the kids to work on the computer and for you to print worksheets. Also ESLHQ is great for creating worksheets/games. Letter magnets with picture cards to spell out are good. Leaptracks if you have any in your building. Good luck.

I would direct you to ask the union if you have a question about it but I don't think there is a limit. If the population of limited English proficient students is growing I don't think that has anything to do with the union. It sounds like the demographics of your school might be changing. If there is a certain amount of students in one grade level that speak the same language (I believe it is 20 but I am not 100% sure) they are entitled to a bilingual education program. (I teach ESL)
