I have had this on my to do list for at least 3 years....
I went today
she removed 5
ouch
I was not expecting that
I find out next week if they are skin cancer or just odd moles....
I already feel better for going
my younger brother had skin cancer on his back...at 27..so you never know!

Ive been bothering my dh to go for years to the derm. He is extremly fair with light blue eyes and has ALOT of moles and such. He finally went and they found atypical melanoma on his arm. He just had surgery this past week and we are waiting to see if they got it all out. But your are 110% right, everyone should go!!

Recently I saw an ad in Self magazine that advertised certain derms that were doing free skin cancer screenings. Since I had never been checked before (and I'm very fair w/ several moles that could've been something) I made an appt. I'm so glad I did... they told me that none of my moles looked abnormal and I'm absolutely fine. What a relief!! I had convinced myself that I'd have cancer. I forwarded that ad to all of my friends... GO! If for no other reason than peace of mind.

Everyone should go but we should also work to prevent skin cancer. One of my best friends is out walking in the city a lot and she does not leave her house without sunscreen on her face. I'm not as cautious as she is but she has a good point.

My DH has gone twice and they say nothing's wrong, even though he has a lot of moles that have the "warning signs" I guess to the experts they look ok. I am watching to see if they change, though.
I had one removed YEARS ago i college... you can;t even see the scar anymore and it was like a pinch, that's all. Def. worth it!

I go every year. Nothing wrong to date although I had a few skin tags removed.
There is one on my leg that I've had forever..it hasn't changed but I think I'll have it removed anyway.

Couldn't agree more.
I have had 2 spots of basal cell skin cancer removed.
Always best to be safe and get checked.

I just went a few weeks ago for the first time.
He said everything looked normal and didn't remove anything- I was shocked (I have a ton of moles)
Told me to come back in a year or two unless I notice changes or something new.

I went to the derm to have a mole removed because it was in the middle of my tattoo on my back and I just wanted it off. It looked like a ‘normal’mole. The derm didn’t really even want to remove it because he said I’d have a small scar. I said I didn’t care, I didn’t want the mole. Well, their policy is to test all moles. It turned out it was squamous cell cancer. They say that squamous cell affects men, in their 50's with a history of sun exposure... Well, I am 36, female, rarely go in the sun... Even the derm was surprised because he said he can tell looking at my skin that I don’t go in the sun and I didn’t as a child either. So I had to go back and they cut out like a 1” square to get clean ‘margins’, NOW my tattoo has a funny scar in it… LOL.
I have to go back every 3 months for a year and then once a year hereafter, because he said (I forget the number) maybe it was 100 times more likely to get more now. He said if he didn’t remove it, it could have killed me, I thought it was really scary, especially because I thought melanoma was the one to worry about.
You really never know, better safe than sorry. Even something YOU think looks normal may be cause for concern, so let a professional check you.
My experience was sort of similar. I had something on my face that I wanted removed for cosmetic reasons. The doctor's atittude was, "okay, I'll remove it if you hate it that much." Results came back that it was a basal cell. I think they are more common than what you had but is still a form of skin cancer. After that I made her remove 2 more that looked just like it but those were not skin cancer. Now I have 2 more very small things, went to a different doctor and even though I told him what happened, he insists that these 2 new things are fine. Next year I will probably ask for them to be removed, especially if they grow. I was never a sun worshipper but basal cells run in my family.

Ugh...up until I had my son I was a HUGE tanner. I have so many spots I worry about but am to scared to go. I know it's stupid and I need to just grow the b*lls and go. Especially having a small son and another on the way...I shouldn't be taking chances by waiting.

This is such an important PSA!! Thanks for posting.
I made an appt with a derm after a friend urged me to. They biopsied 2 moles, and both came back as melanoma!  Luckily, they were caught early, so everything should be fine. But I never would have thought that I would get melanoma....I am Italian, dark hair/eyes, tan easily......none of the warning signs were there. I am now urging all of my friends to get checked out.....you never know!

It's a must!! I go once a year. I've had 3 removed. My tanning salon days and beach w/o sunscreen days are done after my cousin died at 32 with melanoma.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the suffolk area? I went to a derm a few months ago and I wanted him to just check out my skin. He said he would only look at something I thought look suspicious. I was pretty mad because first of all how do I know if it suspicious and second.. i cant see my back!
Anyhow I forgot to find another doc..so any suggestions would help!

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard! What kind of dr is this a hole? I go every year in May to get checked, I have a few big moles like chocolate chip sized and 10000000 beauty marks...this year they were concerned about a teenie tiny dot on my toe. It looks like a beauty mark so it never worried me! It will probably come off next year--point is, it never would've concerned me. I have had 100 biopsies on various ones on my back as well...everythings been a-ok thusfar.
I used to go to Dr Phyllis Smith when I lived in Huntington and I liked her, you can give her a try--
