Hair loss- which Dr to go to?
Over the past 2 years (since I gave birth to my DD), I've noticed that my ponytail has gone from being full to being kinda sparse. Over the weekend, I noticed that in the front of my head, my hair is very thin for me- and although probably no one will notice, I notice it, and its really bothering me. I've had alot of stress in my life over the past 6 months, so I'm guessing that is contributing to it.
Would I make an appointment with my PCP or a dermatologist?

Re: Hair loss- which Dr to go to?
I went to a derm first who took a scalp sample and drew blood. Make sure they take blood for FREE testosterone, which is diff than reg. test. I would also suggest going to a female - I found the 2 male drs I went too as very dismissive about my concerns and kind of insensitive. My derm. then sent me to an endocrinologist where my only option was a specific birth control pill. Some forms are homoronal which can be medically stopped, some are from your thyroid, others types of hair loss are hereditary. I have androgenic alopecia. It fell out terribly for about 2 yrs and I've noticed it has lessened. My only saving grace was that I started out with a ton of hair and now have a normal - thin amount. I feel for you - it's a very upsetting time.
**stress BTW does not contribute to hair loss, that is a big myth. Unless the stress is so severe that it has changed your health or mental/physical state

Re: Hair loss- which Dr to go to?
I just went to a derm for this very same problem. He actually specializes in hair loss. He ran a bunch of blood tests for now and we'll see what comes up with that. Here's his info: Theodore Daly, MD
Good Luck!

Re: Hair loss- which Dr to go to?
I was also going to suuggest Dr. Daly. He is amazing. I also see nurse Munnie in the practice and really like her. I have alopecia areata and it took me 2 years before I found a dr that would take me seriously and not treat me with the attitude of "oh well". It's so hard as it is to deal with hair loss. I also wanted to add that Dr. Daly is part of the national alopecia foundation. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to fm I have been through so much with this in the last 5 years.
