Okay I FINAALY CONSOLIDATED my SALLIE MAE Loans and finally got thru to them!

This took ALL day to get someone on the phone. It was busy or they had a higher then expected call volume. My payments were cut ALOT. I highly recommend you do this , the application deadline is June 30th. I got an interest rate of 4.25%. It is a relief , I was paying almost 900.00 a month. If anyone needs to call them there # is 1-800-448-3533
and customer service is 1-888-272-5543, option 1, then option 1 , and then option 0. (zero). Just wanted to help my fellow lifamily buddies.Chat Icon HTHChat Icon

Great!!! I just did it through Nextstudent. com. I was contacted and have a rate of 3.37% which will become 3.125% when I re-enroll for the automatic payments, then in 3 years, it will go down to 2.125%!!! And my monthly payments are $278 rather than $300 for my 10 year loan!!! I am so happy!!!Chat Icon

I took out my loan from the government directly- each semester I took out a loan. Although it's all under my social security number, each loan is considered different. I think you can still consolidate if it's only one loan.

i applied through sallie mae yesterday.. i had my staffords and pplus loan through Citibank and also had a Federal Loan through Direct Loan services. Should I apply to any other service in hopes I get a lower rate???

Wouldn't Direct Loan Services have the lowest rate b/c it's the government? I think through Direct Loan you can consolidate all of them?

I know I've been getting lots of consolidation junk mail from other types of companies- but I never called them, i just went right through the Government.

I know I posted this before, but I'll go through it again. I consolidated my loans about 8 months ago, and I did it right through the government as well. The benefit to doing that is you usually get the lowest rates (I think my rate is 2.5%). The downside is that you cannot consolidate any outside private loans you have with the federal loan consolidation, so you can either consolidate your private loans through a private company, like Sallie Mae, or if they are low enough, try to pay them off (mine is about $10k, so I transferred it to a zero interest card, and will pay it off by the end of the year, so all that's left are my federal loan payments). If you only have one loan you can still consolidate - the benefit to consolidation isn't only the lower interest rate, but you can also extend the life of the loan so your monthly payments are lower, though in the long run you end up paying more because you pay interest for the extended years.
