Jack thomas, arrived 10/22/09

10/21 wed nite i had my 40 week checkup. 10/22 was my due date. The week before i had no progress. This visit i was 3 cm dialted and 90% effaced and had apparently lost my mucus plug and had not known Chat Icon .

Because we conceived via IUI/clomid I am considered high risk, or what the dr. called "premium pregnancy" b/c it was wanted and we had intervention to get pregnant. Really they just need to make sure every precaution that can be taken, will be, to ensure a successful pregnancy/delivery. That said, my dr. didnt want me going to far past my due date and wanted to induce me.

We were the last patients of the day Wed nite, and while im getting ready after the visit, i hear the dr. in his office calling labor and delivery for their schedule. Friday was all booked..2 inductions, 3 c-sections. And the dr. wasnt on call that weekend at the hospital (and he said he had a wedding that weekend..LOL.) SO he started scheduling me for thursday morning (the next morning that is.)

DH was like..this is great..schedule it! I stood there, all the color ran out of my face. I tried begging for friday..Please just one more day!! Dr. said i could wait to go on my own, but didn't want me going past the weekend. So i said ok..sign me up for tomorrow. this was already 9pm at nite. I left there, and literally had a meltdown in the elevator. IT suddenly became very real that this baby was coming and suddenly I felt I was not prepared for this.

We got home, called the family to get ready b/c tomorrow we were having this baby (we live in pa, they're in brooklyn). I started finalizing stuff around the house, emailing work, getting things together, etc. I remember it was almost 1am by the time we got to sleep and really neither one of us could sleep.

Oddly enough i woke up at like 4 am to pee and saw a tiny bit of blood. about 15 min later i felt like what were poop cramps, but lasted longer. so i was like holy crap..what the hell?? they were sporadic, but apparently I was going into labor on my own Chat Icon . they were becoming more regular by 6 am when we were getting ready to leave for the hospital.

We arrive and they get me checked in , hooked up , exmained, etc. I was still 3 cm dialted. Pitocin was started and at some point i dont recall the contractions kicked up a notch. Dr. came in and broke my water which was soo gross. I labored for a few hours to 5 cm and by then i was begging for the anesthesilogist. He would become my new favorite person Chat Icon I could see the contractions intensifying on the monitor and coming more quickly thanks to the pitocin. within 20 min the epidural was in, didnt hurt much at all, and about 15 min after that i was happy as a clam.

Until a few hours later the epi wore off on my belly and i could feel everything. my legs were numb though..LOL. they had to adjust it. Still didnt work b/c it only renumbed my right leg. at that point, that leg was so dead, you could have amputated it, i wouldnt have known. they had to adjust it again but this time tilted me to the left side so it would go into the cathether the right way and work where it should. A little while later all these adjustments made me groggy and kind of ill and I remember just sleeping for a few hours.

By 4:30 pm or so I was 10cm and the nurse started getting me prepped to start pushing. DH was a real champ taking care of me the whole day. B/c my right leg was practically dead, the labor nurse had to hold that leg up for me, and DH had to hold the left side. I pushed for almost 2 hours. DS still wouldn’t come out b/c his head kept slipping back in after I would push. He was stuck on my pelvic bone. Finally she called the Dr in to get his opinion and probably get a vacuum set up. Sure enough, that’s what we needed and by 6:30 pm on the dot DS arrived into the world.

The cord was wrapped around his neck lightly. The dr said it was good we induced b/c if I went a few more days the cord could have been wrapped much tighter. So in the end, all worked out. He came out screaming. It was the most amazing thing to hear. They gave him to me right away and his tiny little hand gripped my finger and he calmed down. Almost as if he knew I was his mommy and he was going to be all right. It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever experienced. My husband was blown away by the whole experience.

i tore pretty bad from what the dr said. I had a lot of stitches and was in a lot of discomfort for a few days. But 3 weeks PP im back to my pre-pregnancy weight, the swelling is gone, and the stitches seemed to be healed.

DH lost his father when he was 16 very unexpectedly. I knew this day would be hard for him because of that. Our son looks so much like my husband and his father, its amazing.

Our first week home was quite difficult. Between me not being able to get DS to latch and not breastfeed and DS having issues with milk protein, it was a very trying week, mentally and physically. We made 2 dr visits and a trip to the emergency room. Not my idea of what our first week would be like. We’re still adjusting. Mentally im in a better place now. I will say I never knew the adjustment would be so hard. But I love DS to pieces and I know in a few more weeks he’ll probably be a lot better with his tummy issues.

Anyway, giving birth wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Partly due to the magic of the Epidural. I was scared to death of it, but when it came to it that day, I was so excited to meet the little guy, I was pretty calm and just embraced it. I guess that’s mother natures way of getting us through labor and delivery.
