d& c

what exactly happens? is it painful? i was looking online and saw i need anethesia???

i go today to find out if i passed the baby or not...i am praying i did..i DO NOT want a d&c

if you passed the baby how did you know?? i had huge clots and TMI one was almost the size of the pad i think that was the baby but im not sure

I had a d&c at almost 9 weeks. I passed nothing so it had to be done. I was very nervous and scared, but it was over relatively quickly. Here's how mine went:

You go into the ambulatory (or same day) surgery unit and they prep you (iv, change into a gown, blood pressure, etc.) The nurse will ask you questions, so will the anasthesiologist. The anasthesia will most likely be administered through your iv once you are in the operating room. They transferred me to the table from the gurney and they administered it. It feels a bit cold in your arm as it goes in. Within about 1 minute I was out! I didn't even see my doctor come in (though I had seen her before). It took about 30 minutes, which I have been told is the normal time frame.

I woke up in recovery. I had the slightest crampy feeling, but nothing unbearable. I was bleeding. They make you go to the bathroom, eat a cookie or cracker and drink something. Then they released me.

I walked in at 9 am and was out by 12.30. The waiting and prep was the longest part.

I know its scary and upsetting. I started crying as they wheeled me in. Hopefully you will not have to have the d&c, but if you do, know that it is not that bad.

I think if you passed clots it sounds promising. I am sure if it did not all pass the doctor will give you these 3 options. At least these were the 3 I got..

1: Meds: these are pills you take to induce a m/c
2: wait for it to pass naturally: I couldn't stand this b/c I just wanted it over with
3: D&C

I chose the meds b/c I am terrified of procedures and it was what my doctor recommended. I thought it would be best for me to deal with it at home...the meds didn't work for me which made it even tougher, and after hearing about the experiences of the girls who got D&C I am thinking I would go that route...still not sure though yet....but you have to do whats best for you. Hopefully it has all passed and you don't have to worry about it!

It really wasn't a bad experience at all, physically. I had basically the same experience as Kristin; I went in for pre-op testing, then had to wait for the procedure. Mine actually got delayed but once I went in, I think the whole thing was like 20 mins,

My biggest fear was being put out. I debated not even doing it but after talking to the anesthesiologist I felt more comfortable. I also met my doctor before the surgery. he sat with me and answered all my questions. Even when I went into the room and they were putting me out, everyone was so comforting and soothing. Before I could even panic about the anesthesia, I was out.

Its emotional, I wont deny that. I stood strong until i was on the table, then I cried. I just couldnt believe it came down to that. In the end though, I am happy I went with the d&c. After 2 weeks of the baby having no HB, I still hadnt started bleeding so I knew it would be a long process passing it on my own and I just wasnt mentally strong enough to do it.

After the procedure I felt fine. I had a cup of coffee, used the bathroom and that was it basically.

Hopefully, you wont have to go through this since you are afraid but if you have to, just know its not so bad Before the d&c I never had so much as a tooth pulled so to me this was like a big surgery but it was very easy.

I also had D & C at 9 or so weeks and I had NOT passed anything on my own, just spotting.

I was under anestesia (sp) an was super nervous but I woke up and it seemed like nothing happened at all.

I had a D&C at 19 weeks after I (no other way to say it) gave birth to the product, the placenta wasn't releasing so I was rushed down to have a D&C, I had a spinal block, and I chatted away to the doctors during the procedure, it wasn't bad at all, and once the spinal block wore off (which was a long time) I felt 100% back to normal.

i had mine yesterday. not so bad. they put you under; it was my first time being put under. it was a good sleep--that i'll say. after, some bleeding and nauseau from the anesthesia. today (this morning) I'm tired and a bit crampy. Right after the procedure, in recovery, I was very unsteady on my feet and needed the nurse to help me to the bathroom. My doc sent the tissue to pathology for testing. The entire ordeal was more intense than I thought and it is most certainly a minor surgery, but I'm glad it's over--you will be, too. I go back in 2 weeks for a checkup; I guess she sees that she got everything. She didn't tell me I would pass clots, but she did say if I soaked a pad in under an hour to go to ER. No s e x, tampons for one month. She said to expect a pd in 4-6 wks. The scariest part for me was going in. I started crying and told DH to say goodbye to the baby. Even though I knew there was really no baby anymore, just a sac. The staff (huntington hospital) was amazingly caring and the anesthesiologist sang Fly me to the Moon for me as he put the mask over my face, and I was out in 8 seconds!
