Tier 5 in 2010?

Tier 5 could be a real possibility in 2020:

If you are thinking about teaching (and have not already started) as a profession, I strongly suggest you try to sub by the end of 2009:

Tier 5

I would probably rush to get my number for Tier 4 also, but remember that while each tier gives up something...they also get something in return...looks like for .5% extra the first 10 years, tier 5 is able to get more pension for each year they work after 25 years

It is referring to yoru place in the NYS Teachers' Retirement System. If you are a newer teacher you are most likely Tier 4. If you want more info on the specifics look here: http://www.nystrs.org/main/benefits/service.htm

According to my union, Tier 5 will have to contribute to their pension for their entire lifetime of teaching vs the other tiers who stop contributing after 10. Also, I believe the minimum age to retire would be 57 / 30 instead of 55 / 30.

So if you are a city teacher who wants to work on the Island or a recent graduate start subbing immediately so you can have the benefits of tier 4.

no, i think that it only applies to city teachers. Not to other city employees.

I'm so glad I opted into the retirement system when I was subbing now!

From what I understand, you only have to work for one hour at any state job (NYSERS time will transfer to NYSTRS) before the end of the year.

We have all our teacher aids signing up and even one teacher's daughter is doing work study at a SUNY school and signed up...she will be tier 4 when she graduates and looks for a job.
