Teachers Need your Help
I am strongly considering a career change. After 10 yrs in coporate America I think it is time for a change.
My undergrad is not in education. Who has the best masters program on the island? I want to get this done asap so I am going to do it full time. So I need some type of part time job too. I am looking to get certified in 7-12. Can someone walk me through this process?
TIA

Re: Teachers Need your Help
I could be wrong, but I think you would have to start with your Master's in Education (not a specialization like reading or special ed)...although you may be able to get dually certified in education and special education. If you are doing 7-12 then you would have to decided on a subject area...I would contact BOCES, I think they could better guide you about what you need

If you are looking for 7-12, look into Queens College. They have a fast track certification (not a Masters - you would still have to get that later on).
If you have 36 credits in the subject you are interested, you take ed courses through them - student teach and get an post -bachelor's certification.

St. John's has a career change program. It is a 42 credit masters in adolescent education. You would have to make up any missing content credits on your own. Those don't have to be grade credits.

Re: Teachers Need your Help
Dowling also has a "career change" masters in Education program. It's 39 credits for the basic certification. Or, they also have another program (I think it's 52 credits) where you get certified in literacy or special ed., as well as the regular classroom teacher certification. With that program, you are able to get certified after only 27 or so credits. So you can begin working as a teacher and you have a certain amount of years (I think 5) to complete the rest of the credits. I did the 39 credit program, so I'm not positive on all of the details for the other program. Either way, you have to do 2 semesters of student teaching, one part time and the other full time. It took me about 2 years to become certified to teach, but I could have been done even quicker if I had taken summer courses. Good luck!

Re: Teachers Need your Help
Thanks for the help. I think I am going to look into Dowling. I would love to go to Queens College or Hunter but the commute is just not feasible.
Someone mentioned Boces. Can anyone tell me whom I have to call and what needs to be done? I am in Suffok County. TIA

Call Western Suffolk BOCES and ask to speak with someone in Certification. Their job is to approve certifications so they can tell you exactly what you need.

Re: Teachers Need your Help
I am working as a teacher in the Fellow program. This may be a good program for you. It is for career changers. You start teaching immediately and they pay for the majority of your masters degree in education. FM me for more info.
