? about conceiving after cervical dysplasia

Okay, we are not trying or even thinking about trying yet (even though were 38 & 40), but my DH was asking questions last night about the problems I had in the past with cervical dysplasia.

I had quite a severe and advanced case, so after an initial colposcopy I went on to have the leep procedure, which I was advised can affect your chances of conceiving and of holding the pregnancy full-term because of the scar tissue and potential weakening of the cervix.

I was wondering if there are any ladies here who have had the same procedures and have had problems conceiving or going full-term?

Re: ? about conceiving after cervical dysplasia

Dysplasia, itself usually doesn't usually affect conception. However, you can ask your Dr. if your cervix is shorter from the procedures. If that's the case, you may need a cerclage (a small stitch) put in during pg....

Sometimes the cervical mucsles tense up and it causes cervical stenosis. The cervix may have a hard time dilating, and sometimes IUIs are used in women with this situation to help conception along. Although sperm travels through a very small opening so many times IUIs aren't even necessary.

Just make sure you don't have any infections, since a lot of times women with dysplasia can be more suspectible to infections, and that can affect fertility.

Thanks, Redstar.Chat Icon I have all the info on what would need to be done if I did experience problems from the ob/gyn who did the procedure. I go for regular check-ups and there has been no additional problems of any kind since the procedures were done 6 years ago.Chat Icon

I was just wondering what the likelihood was that I would have difficulty with conceiving or a pregnancy. I guess we won't know until we tryChat Icon

Thanks again.

Re: ? about conceiving after cervical dysplasia

Just wanted to let you know that I had 2 LEEPS done for the severity of my dysplasia and I was fine throughout my whole pregnancy. They gave me a vaginal ultrasound out 22 weeks to check my cervical length and everything seemed just fine...

ETA: I got PG my second month off BCP and we weren't even trying...

I also had dysplasia and had at least 4 colposcopies, and then 2 cryosurgeries--you know where they freeze the affected area off. I got pregnant the first month trying. I asked my OB if there would be any problems dilating, etc. in labor and I was assured there wouldn't be. I didn't make it past 3 cm. but I was also not in labor for more than 7 or 8 hours. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the treatments.

Good luck to you!!!!

Re: ? about conceiving after cervical dysplasia

I also had a few leeps b/c my dysplasia turned into 1st stage cervical cancer , I had some laser treatments done as well after.

I had one of the best oncologist GYNS in ny and he swore it would NEVER make an incompentant cervix, so Im believing him ...

unfortunatly the surgeries did create a lotof scar tissue and my cervix is almost sealed shut from it..making it next to impossibel for us to conceive naturally.

That's terrible!

I also had a pretty big leep procedure about 6 years ago for advanced dysplasia and I worried it might affect my ability to conceive.
