More EI

I'm feeling very overwhelmed tonight so this is really just a part vent and part pity party.

DS has made so much progress in the last few months. Yet tonight I learned that they are sending him for an OT evaluation. He has been getting speech, special ed. and just started PT. So it kind of feels like there are new things coming up now that maybe weren't there before which is kind of discouraging.

Anyway, I think the part that is really upsetting me tonight is that I really hate that DS has to get all of this therapy at daycare because I have to work. So I feel so uninvolved with it and almost feel like I'm abandoning him to go at it alone.

I had my boss agree to let me work a 4 day work week which worked out well for a while but now I'm finding that we are just so busy that it isn't feasible.

And now we're possibly adding OT to the mix. I can definately understand why he needs it. And I have "the more the merrier" attititude towards EI because i already pay $600 per month and am maxed at my NJ cost share so I figure I'm getting my money's worth and he is benefitting. But i just feel so out of touch and awful about it.

Any other working moms trying to manage therapy? Anyone else feel so guilty?

Re: More EI

Hi Not a mom yet, but I am an occupational therapist that does EI.
Just an idea, but h ave you ever thought about doing team meetings once a month (or every other month)? When ever I am on a case that has multiple therapies/ therapists we have a team meeting to discuss with the family unit and with all the therapist what is going on across the board to keep the family in the loop and also let all the therapist know what is going on with the child and review progress, goals and just general brain storm ideas!
Can you talk to your service coordinator and try to get this service added on?

We all feel gulity. If it's not about working, it would be something else.

I was at home when DS was getting therapy and I still feel guilty.... Maybe he should have been in daycare around more children, maybe I didn't take him out enough, maybe I'm boring, etc...

There is no right answer. We are all just doing the best we can.

Don't feel guilty. You are great mom, and you are doing what is best for your son. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: More EI

Thanks ladies...I was having a moment of pity last night.

I've long gotten over the guilt of being a working mom and have accepted it and know it is for the best for us.

I think I'm just so overwhelmed with work and some other personal stuff that I feel like my handle on my son's issues are slipping away and I don't like the feeling.

We do have "parent training" once per month but since I went to a 4 day workweek I used that day of therapy at home to discuss issues and progress with the therapists. They also are very good about calling me at least once a week to have long discussions with me about it.

Oh well...it'll work out. It always does. Just sad about it right now. Thanks again

Re: More EI

Have you thought about getting some therapies done on weekends?

DH was really out of the loop for a long time. I was the only link he had to everyday's schedule. And the monthly team meetings was really not about him and DS and seeing DS do things.

We know have sessions on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. I work on weekends anyway. But being in the morning it does not interfere with anything we would do anyway later on that day.

DH feels so much in touch with DS's progress, etc..

Just a thought!

It did take a while for me to find a great therapist for the weekend. It's not a "popular" time but some people want extra $$$ and want those hours. Especially in the morning.

That's actually a really good idea that I hadn't thought of. Not only for me but also for DH. He is completely out of the therapy loop other than what I tell him or if he happens to be off from work and I keep DS home from daycare and have therapy at home.

I may suggest that the OT be done on weekends. Their concerns related to some "self-help" issues (like dressing) and some body awareness (as opposed to fine motor which he is fine with) and I think these particular issues really require more parent training on our part because I find it hard to draw the line between his issue and my issue (with just taking control and dressing him rather than letting him do it himself to see if he can do it or to allow him to develop these skills).

I didn't know that either although that's probably a less viable option because he usually sleeps until then and I hate to have to wake him up earlier because his sleep directly correlates to his attending to sessions throughout the day.
