I asked once I'd booked the christening with the church. But they both knew they would be the godparents, so they weren't surprised at all.

Re: Godparents

Thanks! We already decided on my SIL (my DH is her daughter's GF) and one of my Bro's. I have twin brothers who I will never be able to choose between, so I am either going to flip a coin or my DH said to have them do a decathalon (a game of HORSE, arm wrestle, etc) to see who wins. They are athletes and super competetive!

Re: Godparents

Yes, you can have two of the same sex godparents, but I'm not sure if you can have three. (my SIL plus my two bros). Hopefully I will have more than one child, so I would pick my other brother for the second...
I'm crazy I think wayyyyy too ahead. I am only three months...Chat Icon

Re: Godparents

We have NO idea.....my sister is Jewish but I converted, so I don't know if they'll let her stand up. DH is his first nephews' godfather...

DH has 2 sisters-both married....DH has a multitude of great friends that would be great godfathers.....

It's going to be quite a dilemma for us!

I beleive that as long as one is Catholic the other does not have to be.

When we went to the Priest to plan Patrick christening he asked me what religion the God Parents were.

Re: Godparents

I was just going to say that Tracy...

We asked one of my SIL's on Mothers Day and then we asked my brother the day we found out what the baby was.

No, your sister CANNOT be a godparent to your child because she is Jewish. She does not believe in the Catholic faith, so therefore she cannot stand up for your child as a godparent. One godparent needs to be Catholic while the other one can be any other Christian denomination (will be known as a Christian Witness). You also cannot have someone who converted from Catholicism to another faith since they have renounced the Catholic faith.

Also, you can have 2 men and 2 women be godparents if that helps in family matters, but only one set will go in the official Church books.

I used to work in a church rectory so I used to deal with this stuff all the time.

Re: Godparents

I waited until the baby was about 3 months old. I struggled with the decision of which brother to chose for I felt both were worthy adn really felt bad picking one over the other. I did not want to have two godparents of the same sex.

My church said you can have more than one godmother or godfather but only one godmother and one godfather can sign the baptismal certificate. At least one of the godparents must be of the faith in order to sign the baptsimal certificate. If you chose one who is not of the faith, they cannot sign the certificate. My church was not strong in that you havd to pick someone of the faith - they said more you want to pick someone who will be a good example and a role model. In fact mjy priest said he was a "godparent" (if that is the correct term for someone of the jewish faith.

Re: Godparents

With my first born I think it was just common knowledge that my SIL would be the godmother, she is more like a sister to me, I think I kept referring to the baby as her godchild, my 2nd born has been my best friend since we were about 8, so she knew she was next up to bat, and I asked my aunt (who is more like my SIL) when I forst found out I was pregnant since we are so close.
