How does a kid get approved for a specialized preschool? Is the whole thing covered? Is there a place i can find a list of special ed preschools in nasssau. TIA

I live in NJ so it might be different but here is what I know:

Before age 3 it gets approved through EI.

After age 3 you need to go through your school district and your EI coordinator should be able to walk you through the transition process. The district will assign a child study team to your family, they will evaluate your child in various areas and then make a decision if the child is qualified and they are responsible to arrange (and pay) for that.

Under 3, EI would be involved. It is half days only and either 5 days or 2-3 days. Depending on the school. But only half days before 3 yo (about a couple of hours).

I know Little Village has a class for under 3 in EI. DS was accepted for last September (he was 27 months) but I decided to keep him home to keep focusing on ABA/ one on one type therapies until he is 3.

3 and over, is handled by the school district.

Once they turn 3 the school district takes over. If they deem that a specialized preschool is needed they will approve it. My district sent me to three different preschools to look at. Everything is fully covered including door to door transportation.

Re: I know I am jumping ahead here but.. questiona bout special preschool

there are so many pre-schools the list is endless...

the therapists that work with your child will probably be best be able to address where they think your child would most benifit, but the final decision is entirely up to you and whatever EI or CPSE decides.

we have looked at ACDS (DS goes 3 times a week), Little village (hoping for a FT spot next year), Barbara C Wilson, Boces, DDI, Dutch lane, Variety... oMG the list is endless, Reighnhart.

not every school may be appropriate for your child.

Re: I know I am jumping ahead here but.. questiona bout special preschool

when DS was first DX we thought for sure he would be going to DDI, but as he progressed (hes been in EI for over a year already) we realized DDI would not have been the right choice...

since they are so young they change so fast....
