Progesterone

So i went to my doctor earlier this week. We decided not to do the blood tests. She said that she just doesn't see why I would be having any miscarriages at all since there's no history in my family and I'm very healthy. She seems to think the 2 times are just coincidence since they're so common and 1 out of every 4 pregnancies end in m/c as it is. BUT she said that I need to take a pregnancy test as early as possible, and if it comes up positive, she'll immediately put me on progesterone just in case. She says it wouldn't hurt the pregnancy even if I didn't "need" it.

Now, how does that work? Is progesterone something that needs to be prescribed or is it something i can just pick up on my own? Because if it's the latter, then I'd probably just want to start taking it NOW. But if not, I'll wait obviously.

If this doesn't work tho, then I'll be getting genetic testing done. It looks like my health insurance DOES cover it. So Hallelujah to that at least

Re: Progesterone

When I went on progesterone they prescribed it and it was a cream you injected...kind of like you would use for a yeast infection?? I put it in at night and slept with it...but i hear there are other ways.. but definitely a prescription.

So they think your body isn't creating progesterone?

Crashing...they sell OTC progesterone creams in health food stores, but I wouldn't think they're as potent as what the doc will prescribe. And I wouldn't use the store-bought kind unless the dr approves it. You don't want to use any synthetic progesterone before O, only after.

Re: Progesterone

They usually prescribe suppositories. I used them for both pregnancies. I had to put it in once a day at night.

Im not a doctor but I have to say that I dont agree with your doctors "you have no history, you are healthy logic". I have absolutely no history and Im perfectly healthy and it turns out I have an immune disorder that I have to see an RE for. Im not saying this will be the case for you but if your insurance covers it, you might want to think about seeing one so you dont have to go through this a 3rd time.

COMPLETELY agree with this. I went by that theory after my first 2 and... had MC #3 a couple of mos later. It doesnt hurt to get the tests and in hindsight i REALLY kicked myself for not doing it after #2 instead of enduring #3 which was emotionally MUCH harder on me than the first 2.

I got progesterone suppositiories prescribed for when we start TTC'ing next month. He told me to take it 2x a day Starting from the Day after I ovulate and continue to take if I am pregnant. If not pregnant and I get AF- then I stop taking and wait untill the day after I ovulate again to start up.

Hope that helps. But it should be something that you need a prescription for

Re: Progesterone

thank you everybody for your thoughts and information. I guess I'll have to wait for the progesterone then (which stinks). I hate when I need prescriptions for stuff. Cut out the middle man and let me take care of things myself. lol.

As for the genetic testing, I might do that. I just got the name of a highly recommended doctor, so maybe i'll give his office a call and see what we can do (and MAKE SURE insurance covers it!!)

Re: Progesterone

A Dr. B Sherlock Holmes quote
"when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

If you are uneasy about your OB/gyn's suggestions and diagnosis of a "coincidence" I would seek another opinion.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.
