I'm confused- what do you think this means.
So the head boss in my office, hasn't come in to the office more than 5 days in the past month.
No one knows where he is (including his secretary).
He cancelled his cell phone and didn't give us the new number. When we call the number he calls us from (thanks to Caller ID), you can't leave a message.
He is unresponsive to emails. Can't leave him voice mails. Barely calls into the office.
His office is suddenly empty. Family photos- gone. Only thing left are files and supplies.
Management committee flies down to have a 30 minute meeting with him alone. He leaves minutes after they do and doesn't return for a week. Limited response to emails.
Today he shows up and is talking about future projects.
I am very confused.
ETA: His contract is up at the end of this month.

I'd assume personal problems, maybe some health issues going on with either him or someone in his family.

Agreed. And he obviously doesn't care to discuss it with others in the office.
I'd not ask any questions and resume business as usual with him.

Sounds to me like he is trying to play hard ball for a better contract by threatening to leave or make everyone think he is leaving

When did management come down? Was it in response to complaints from staff about his being MIA?
My first thought was a sudden serious illness but the clearing out of the office doesn't really fit.
Second thought he really screwed up and know he is about to be caught in something ugly.
Playing hardball - maybe what industry are you in?

He's done. They are not renewing his contract.
He may have some garden leave he has to do before he gives word that he is officially gone.
