Re: TA...UPDATED question
There are different levels of TAs...I know that you start off as a Level 1 (which doesn't require college), then move to Level 2 when you have 9 credits plus one year experience, then Level 3 with 18 credits. Some places pay more for Level 2 and 3.

Re: TA...UPDATED question
you don't need college to be a TA. However, msot districts on LI get away with hiring teachers as TAs. there are so many people with teaching certificates and college degrees (even some with Masters degrees) and not enough jobs. So, many people will settle for a TA position in hopes that it might lead to something more for them. because of that, districts on LI can be selective with who they hire... legally, they can hire a TA with no degree, but most hire and get a teacher at the TA price.
to my knowledge, NYC does not hire TAs... just paraprofessionals, which is different altogether.

Re: TA...UPDATED question
Well that's bad news, lol. I am almost done getting my TA 1 certificate. You have to take the test, take 2 classes and get fingerprinted.
I thought that you had to get the TA1 cert before you could get the 2, then the 3? I have some college credits that could probably be applied. I do have a college degree but not a teaching degree.
I am going to look for parapro jobs too. There isn't any other special certs foe those?
I wasn't aware that there were so many teachers taking the TA jobs though. That sucks. I have the education and some experience but nothing recent. Uuuugh.

jsut because many districts hire teachers as TAs doesn't mean you can't get a job. i would apply anyway!
also, i don't know much about the steps (TA1, TA2, etc.) but as long as you have the first one, you'll be fine.
for paraprofessionals, i think the requirements are less than those for a TA (I think you only need a h.s. diploma) so you shouldn't have a problem there.
good luck!
