Recommendations and feedback needed
I'm awaiting another evaluation. The coordinator and the speech therapist both said that ds might benefit from a center based program. I figured while I was waiting I would start checking out schools. Variety in syosset, Huntington ddi, and building blocks in Commack were suggested. Any feedback would be great. Does anyone's dc go to a center based program. Any help would be great too.

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
As a "parent" I will tell you what I have been told. Now, this is NOT my experience but what I have been told by other parents and therapists in the field.
Variety = not good. Parents seem to like it. Therapists not so much. Just looking to fill out their numbers to get $$. Great class if your child is in the right class/match. Otherwise, not so good.
DDI (Huntington) = mixed reviews. I heard good things and bad things.
Building block = Heard great things about this school. Great school for "borderline" PDD. Not the strongest for full ABA program

I just FMed you!
I have never heard of Variety, can't comment on that. I do "hear" good things about Little Village in Seaford.

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
NOT from personal experience just from what i have been told from people who have worked there.
Variety: they still believe in strap and straight jacket therapy, they do not tell the parents and will not tell them if asked, but they have been known to strap a child to the chair and it is 100% legal if a child is unruly. Parents seem to love this school, teachers and therapists not so much... FM me if you want more info.
DDI (Huntington):i have not heard good nor bad about this one.. the one in Medford all i hear is GREAT things.
Building block: i know nothing about this one
Little Village is a GREAT program...
ACDS just started a program a few years back and its great for 2 year olds (we are using this as back up for my DS for the 3 year old program)
Dutch Lane (speech delayed for 3+) great things
Barbra C Wilson (3+) great school
FM me if you want more info or have other questions on other schools.. BTW my DS is Autistic

Does anyone still use the The Chilren Center of UCP? It's behind the Sparefib in Commack...

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
Thank you all so much. I am going to start making appointments to see the schools. Heather that frightens me so much to hear that about Variety. I would freak out if anyone did that to my child.

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
dont believe everything you hear about variety. my daughter goes there. i am sped teacher. is it the answer to all of her problems? no. do i feel like she is well cared for? yes. i have taught in multiple prominent schools across the island for children with disabilities. you need to investigate all your options and go visit each and every school.

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
fyi restraining a child in a straight jacket is not legal and aversive interventions are never legal in a preschool program.

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
I already told you via FM, but I have nothing but good things to say about DDI. DS goes to Ronkonkoma, not Huntington, but they have been great with him and he has come so far since starting.

Re: Recommendations and feedback needed
I have not heard any horrible things like what have been posted about Variety.I in fact have heard only good things...
In fact, Jacob was on the waiting list to go there this year. I went to many schools to tour and this was by far one of the best in Nassau County that I saw..
I think you need to look at all these schools with an open mind. You will definately feel which one would be right for you...
I bet you will hear positive and negatives about all the schools...
