UPDATE! Hugs and prayers please- speaking in front of the school board tonight
I am so nervous. They decided to cut a counselor at each of the four high schools in our district- adding our numbers to almost 1000 a person. Rediculous. As a veteran counselor who isn't in danger of being cut, I offered to speak. I also have two children in our district.
But I am so worried I am going to screw it up- I have so much to say.

They can't be serious? We have 770 kids in my building and 4.5 counselors.

My caseload down here in Florida is 700+. It's unreal. Christine - I'm sure you will do great!! Two counselors were cut from my school since last April - hence, our caseload numbers!!!

I hope it went well!!! I had to speak last month and I remember that feeling of just wanting it to be finished!
Being that you are also a parent in the district, I hope that they listen to you.

Thank you all for your support and hugs!
Well, we had 40 students and parents speak on our behalf- the highest number ever at a board meeting addressing cuts. It was a moving tribute. Most of the students came from my school since my co-worker and I went to all the classrooms and cried to our students. Hearing the students talk about us so glowingly was amazing- I cried a bunch last night.
I was very happy with my piece. I spoke about finding alternative funding sources and offered them a viable solution to geneate a ton of income using a program we already have in the district. Not to bore everyone with the details, but it a very creative idea that our higher admins shot down because they would have to work on it. I offered to do all the legwork and got a positive response from the board. I will be continuing to work with them on this.
So they did vote 3 to 2 to still give out the pink slips since they have to by March 15 or they won't get the chance again. I understood that. But they did put us back on the top of the priority list where we used to be on the bottom. The board fought about us for an hour and actually it was two board members who used to be against us who fought. The one on our side agreed but said that we have to worry about finding the funding first.
Sorrry this is so long but it was a very exciting night. I felt like Norma Rae. I am not giving up yet!
