Question re: Birthday Party?
Ok, so, before I had my son the last place I wanted to spend my Satruday afternoon was @ a kid's BDay party, (and, even now that I have a kid, it's not really high on my 'wish I was there' list) but that's not the question ........
DH and I have a large group of friends, most have kids, some don't - we had a ginormous baptism and included everyone ..........
however, I'm having trouble w/ the 1st BDay -
Is it A RUDE to leave out my childless friends b/c - well, why would I leave them out JUST b/c they don't have children? or B RUDE to INVITE my childless friends b/c why the hell would they want to come to my kid's 1st BDay and have to bring a gift? They don't even have kids ???
I kind of feel like I'm damned if I do, and damned if I don't - Or do you think it kind of depends on each person's view? In which case, what a PITA !!
Opinions??

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
Invite your childless friends and give them the option to respond yes or no,and if they respond no, don't give them grief about it.
I'd be extrememly hurt not to receive an invite just because I'm childless.

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
I'd rather be invited, especially if our mutual are freinds are going to be there. You are inviting them, because they are your friends not b/c your kids are friends are firends with their kids, so foreinds from the same circle should get the same treatment
I'd have no problem saying 'no thanks', if I didn't want to go.

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
Here is my take: If its a kiddie party, with just kids running around, etc and the parents of those kids then I get why i wouldn't be invited but if its a mixed bag then I feel like you ignored me for some reason. But to be safe I rather be invited.

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
thanks - I hate leaving people off the invite list, regardless of reason -
i'm going to invite them. They all know me well enough to know i'd be the last person to be offended if they declined.

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
It's rude to leave them out if you are including your friends with children.
I would be devastated if I didn't get invited to an event for a friend's child just because I don't have children.
My friend once invited ALL of our friends and their SOs over to her house for dinner one night -- literally my entire group of friends. I was the ONLY one not invited because I happened to be single at the time. It was only for "couples." (Yes, I was the only one of my friends who was single, yet those who weren't were all invited... and some even came without their BFs because of work, etc.)
Anyway, back to the OP's question... I have never in my life been offended by an invite to a 1st B-day party. I have, however, been offended by being "left out" of something because I am different.
ETA - posted this before reading all responses, including the OP's above.

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
I am childless. My friend invited me to her DC's bday party. I would have liked to go but unfortunately we have a prior engagement.
If I was not invited I would not be insulted but I felt really touched that she thought to invite us

I agree with the kiddie party thing, but for a first birthday party, I usually assume it is more family and close friends.

Re: Question re: Birthday Party?
I can't count how many times we've been invited to children's birthday parties of our friends and families.
And we have gone to every single one.
Invite your CF friends and let them have the option to go or not. From my experience, those 1st birthdays tend to be more about adults mingling, than anything else!
