Sienna Hayley's Birth Story-March 1, 2010

I will try not to make this too long. I am typing this as I cuddle with Miss Bean, so I apologize about typos!

At about 32 weeks, I was informed that due to a central herniation in my back, I would not be cleared for a vaginal birth. After discussing this ad nauseum on the boards and with anyone with ears, including my cats Chat Icon DH and I felt the safest option was a scheduled c/s. We scheduled it for March 1st.

First off, I had horrible panic attacks in the weeks prior. i pictured every possible scenario and read every horrendous birth story I could find, as well as watching A Baby Story and all the other TLC shows. My OB was great by advising me to stop picturing everything that can go wrong and my therapist was awesome in helping me cope-if you have anxiety, do this!

My c/s was scheduled for March 1st at 7:30, so I had to get there at the ungodly hour of 5am. We were admitted and I was put on monitors and started on IV fluids. They forgot to get me in for pre-op so I had b/w done. I was having a mini heart attack at this point. That was until our incredible nurse came in. She was so sweet and explained every detail to me and made me feel so much better. They gave me something in my IV to neutralize stomach acid which made me groggy and another antacid that tasted like Sweet Tarts. I was very uncomfortable and crampy and freezing. I wanted to sleep and thought that I would get bumped. Before I knew it, the OB came and said we were ready and let's get a move on. I walked to the OR-my last walk before I became a mommy

Oh, one funny thing-the nurse checked the monitor before I was disconnected for the c/s and asks, "Are you feeling those?" Chat Icon I asked what and she informed me I was contracting every 3 minutes and I would have gone into active labor either way in the next 24 hours! Chat Icon For those of you reading this who are at the end of pregnancy with 0 progress, I hope this gives you hope-4 days earlier, nothing was happening!

So, we go to the OR and my nurse played Pink Floyd on her Ipod for me Chat Icon This was neat because we walked in to our reception to Pink Floyd-so every important occasion in my life happens to Pink Floyd! For those who want to know, Miss Bean arrived to Comfortably Numb!

Next was the spinal. I actually didn't do so badly with this. I've had lumbar epidurals for my disc which involves injecting cortisone into inflamed tissue-that hurt waaay worse for me. They said they were impressed that I didn't even flinch during it-it was no more than a sting. I went numb quickly and I was nauseated, so the anesthesiologist gave me anti-nausea meds while they put up the sheet and got DH in. I felt very little-I remember asking if they did the incision and DH, who watched the whole thing said, "She is almost out." A few minutes later, I heard the sweetest sound of my baby girl crying-my 18 month journey to meet my angel was over and Chat Icon was here. It was the best moment in my life-DH was holding my hand and said she was beautiful. I kept saying over and over-"That's my little girl!"

DH went to cut the cord and they brought my princess over for me to kiss-she was too beautiful to be true!

DH left to follow Miss Bean (she got a 9 on her Apgar) and they stitched me up while I slept. They brought me into recovery where I was already texting and talking to people, although I was exhausted. They took me to our room and gave me Miss Bean to nurse.

I must say, we had a great delivery and I was even on LIF posting pics 5 hours later! Chat Icon I was and still have to take painkillers with the Motrin because of my other conditions, but recovery is not all that bad. I am sore, but I am still able to do a lot. The worst was walking the first day after the c/s-ouch! It gets better though. The only other issue I have is BFing-I luckily pump a lot but we are working on getting her on and my flat nipples. I wish I knew so I could have worked on them before, but I am now and although this is harder and more frustrating than the NYS Bar exam, I am sticking to it!

So without further adieu, I present Miss Bean, or as we now know her, Sienna Hayley!
