I hate cheating...
Why is it that they're the ones who screw up, but I'm the one who feels sick tonight? (Granted, they don't know I know yet, but...)
They're from my favorite class this year. I adore this group. I really thought they were better than this...

Re: I hate cheating...
Ugh, not the way to start your week
If this post made me feel bad, I can only imagine the guilt those kids will be feeling later today. Look at it this way, better from them to learn the lesson now rather than later in life. Still sorry you have to deal with this
Hope today is better

Sorry. That sucks. Don't let them get away with it though, even though you like them. You would be doing them a diservice.

I never let them get away with it... my conscience wouldn't let me, luckily I guess. And the conversations today were every bit as bad as I thought they'd be...

It stinks! But remember, no matter how mature they may seem that they are still just kids. The lessons you teach them about cheating are way more important than the ones that follow curriculum.

You're lucky you can prove it. I had a student walk into my office today with a college essay that he blatantly didn't write. (I've seen this student's writing before; this essay was clearly written by his college-age sister). I reminded him that "editing" is not the same as having someone do your work for you. He got very snarky and left.
I worry about kids that cheat and don't get caught; it's like an invitation to do it again. And if they get caught later in life, the consequences will be much worse...

I feel the same way with the ones you can't prove. I was so grateful that this was at least a cut and dried situation. Of course, one of the kids is arguing the point (that he shouldn't be academically penalized) because he did the work and didn't KNOW his friend would copy it when he GAVE it to him. (So WHY GIVE IT TO HIM.) Meanwhile, the copier is BEYOND remorseful and is actually TRYING to take the full blame (which I really can't let him do because he obviously didn't twist anybody's arm here.)
Ugh. This is probably the least fun part of the job. I ended up consoling the copier of the homework on the day I confronted them because he just broke down sobbing, and the amount of stress this poor kid must be under just has to be unbearable. (He's a really good kid... even with all of this, that much is clear.) And, ironically, the one who actually did the work (and gave it to his friend) is the one with the history of cheating. But he was just trying to "help a friend." Right.
