Literacy Teachers?
I have a 7th grade student who is a great student . He is a smart kid but complained to his mother that he can't read as fast as she can. He said he gets hung up on words.
Any thoughts about what could be causing this or how to help him?

Re: Literacy Teachers?
Many kids are good readers but lack oral fluency due to lack of practice/confidence..he can read sight/common words on cards, read simple stories often to get a feel for words and/or he can tape himself reading and play them back so he can hear what he sounds like...also, he could listen to books on tape, etc. to hear fluency..sometimes it helps kids to not only hear others, but to hear themselves..hth

Re: Literacy Teachers?
He also says he has to stop and think about what he read and has to go back and read it again.

Re: Literacy Teachers?
I think those are good strategies...I'm wondering why he's comparing himself to his mom..sounds like he's emerging as a reader and feeling out what he needs to succeed...

Re: Literacy Teachers?
Does your school have Playaways? I think they are a great way to have kids listen to audiobooks.
What about giving him a topic he loves at his reading level OR a book a little below his level so it can build confidence?
Can you model some strategies for him? What you do when you get to a word that you don't know.
