Re: The official unemployment thread
I was laid off June 2009. I worked out of state but we are back and I'm trying to find a teaching job. I hate interviewing. I have 2 I am waiting to hear back from this coming week.

does any one know if under the new legislation claims the happened after jan 2010 will be extended past the 26 weeks? its confusing
If you go to the NYS DOL website, there is a benefit calculator where you can put in the actual first claim date and it will tell you how many weeks you have.
Example I put in Feb 1, 2010 and it said a person who first claimed that day is eligible for 46 total weeks

BUMP.
I am so bored. What are you unemployed peeps doing with your days? I try to look for jobs every day but sometimes I just see nothing on all my job sites. It's getting depressing. Over 60 applications and not even one interview yet.
How do you keep busy and motivated?

My 20 month old daughter keeps me busy and motivated. She's my unofficial boss. I'm staying strong for her and my husband. I look everyday too and send out countless resumes. My last interview was in the summer. It does get depressing, but I just refuse to let myself get down. What job sites are you looking?

Re: The official unemployment thread
I just lost my job after 9 1/2 years at the same place
Finding a job in my field will be really tough, so I am super nervous even with all the experiance I have & that they say they will give a good recommendation.
Inmy field they want to hire interns who earn less then 1/2 of what I do. I know my old boss already hired 1 and hear there is a 2nd who may get a job with them. Means for less then my salary he just got 2 people.

Re: The official unemployment thread
Sure, I'll join in... although it's been a lil while since anyone posted on this thread, but ah well...
I have never been without a job... my whole life. Till I was 6 months pregnent. I was laid off from my job for being "out-sourced"... I was in the I.T. Dept. I knew for a fact they were hiring in other departments, and I was there for quite a few years, yet off I went. It was sooo hard.
Between DH and myslef, I was the one that made the money. DH made enough to get food shopping, and some random bill here and there, but my salary paid most of our bills, and built up our savings.
So losing my job was hard....real hard. We got behind on all our bills once our savings were cleared out. DH was appling everywhere for a job, no where was hiring. I still went through the hiring process at that point, but most of them looked at my huge belly and never called me back.
DH finally got a 2nd job after DS was born. I also started looking for work right away as well. Unemployment is not even a quarter or my salary, so it's still been a month here and there that we couldn't pay a bill on time, and we have ONLY been paying our 'primary bills'...such as lipa, oil, rent...etc. Credit cards, well, those have been put on the side .. and we KNEW it was killing our credit. We just didn't have the money to pay. I called the 2 companies we had and asked to work something out, they said we needed to pay $ each month...but we just were bearly making rent. We coudln't do it.
So FINALLY I got a BUCNH of call backs for this one job. They loooved me!! But, I made sure to tell them about my credit, due to our hardship ...that if they were going to judge me as a person on my credit to please look at it from BEFORE November (I had perfect credit then)
Took them two weeks, but sure enough they told me they can't take me aborad since my credit is bad, and it shows "irresponcabiltiy"...seriously? So, now I"m still on unemployment, looking for ANYTHING that will hire me ...
I never thought my life would be like tihs...it's horrible. DH always says that he wants his DCs close in age, but with me not working, that's no possible. Just when we think it's all coming together, boom, something major happens.
Thanks for letting me vent out my story here... I keep being told that we will get through this and it will all work out...but we're just still not seeing the light. One day, one day.

Re: The official unemployment thread
My DH likes labor jobs, but can handle anything. Currently he works as the warehouse manager at a print shop and loves his job. But the pay isn't that grand. For his second job, he works for FedEx early in the morn loading trucks. He says he likes it b/c now he's finally working out daily and getting muscles. Gotta look on the positive side of everything lol. Me, I was customer service my whole life, but always got promoted rather quickly. I have worked in banks as a teller, to a mortgage rep. My last job I started as a receptionist, then customer service and eneded the last 10 mmonths as I.T. Asst, training the new system. Now, with no where hiring me due to my bad credit, I'm trying to make money at home by using the creative side of my brain. I just started last week, and I have a few inquireis...but I'm hoping by next month I'll be OK. If that doesn't work out, we may just as well move out of state. DH found job offereings making more then what he's making at both jobs in NC, and rent will be MUCH less, so I wouldn't have to work. We'll see...

Re: The official unemployment thread
I find it incredibly sad that there is such a long thread of unemployed people. But you can add DH to the list. DH is an electrician who got laid off due to lack of work last week. Im a teacher working as a per diem sub because I can't find a full time position. I'm lucky if I work 2 or 3 days a week. We have a house and a baby on the way and have no idea how we are gonna do it. Not sure why im even writing this. I guess I just need to vent a little.

Re: The official unemployment thread
i'm a teacher. i was informed in april that i am being laid off at the end of the school year. i was 5 months pregnant at the time. had my baby in september, so unemployment blues have no hit me yet. but with a new baby and credit cards to pay off, i'm worried about our financial situation. we're still paying off our wedding (got married 12/09) and now have new baby expenses.
if anyone hears of any job that requires a masters in theology, please let me know. at this point, i'll take administrative assistant if i have to as, long as i get more money than unemployment pays.
thanks, and good luck to all of us who are trying to make ends meet!

My DH runs a head hunting Firm that has two divisions. One specializes in placing "executive Office Support Candidates" and the other "Manufacturing & Logistics". If any one is in that field, feel free to PM me & I will get you in contact with him.

Re: The official unemployment thread
Hello, I suppose I am on here as of Jan 15th.
My company is doing a lot of layoffs, not because of the economy or for downsizing purposes. Just because they are super corporate and feel like reorganizing.
My entire department just got laid off.... but our lay off date doesn't start until mid Jan.
I've never been on unemployment, as have been working at my current job for 11 years!! So I don't know much about what to expect with unemployment. I may have questions come early 2011.

Re: The official unemployment thread BUMP
Giving this thread a big ole bump.
How is everyone doing?
I'm starting to freak out a bit over the unemployment extension expiring even though I only had 3 weeks left anyway.
I'm also starting to feel a bit desperate, a feeling I have never really had before regarding my employment status. I hope I can keep it out of my demeanor if I ever get an interview.
I also feel bad for those who have it worse. I'm well educated and I'm looking at jobs for which I am very overqualified. What the heck does that mean for the people who did not have the same opportunities I had?
Let's commiserate.

Hey there. I took a seasonal job for now. I am keeping my fingers crossed that in the new year people will be hiring more. I hope to get back into my field FT by then. I'm very over qualified for this seasonal retail job but, I took it bc my UE ran out a long time ago and I need anything right now. Prayers for all of us still looking!

My dh found a full time job in August and loves it. He was hired for a higher position than he was applying for too. Because he has to be there 90 days to basically learn everything and then aquire the position, he got "bumped" up a position this week.
Best of Luck to everyone still looking. Something will eventually come your way.
