I liked the writer's style, but I wasn't a huge fan of the book -- it just didn't resonate with me. I'd be willing to try another of her books before I write her off (unintentional book pun! yeah!) completely.
I definitely didn't expect the ending.

the ending made me cry, but I think it was more for personal reasons. something similar happened in my life quite recently, and my friend who lent it to me didn't realize. oddly enough though, it was a good cry.
adding to the personal resonance, her husband's name was Lucien (which is my son's name, though we spell it with an A) and her cat's name was Leo, which is my husband's name. maybe I am just biased
but I did really enjoy it. I would love to be able to read it in French, but alas...I cannot.
