Within the city or outside of it? I think this is a bad time to leave the city, IMO. This is not a good time to give up seniority (but of course, if those two idiot lawmakers pass their bill we'll lose it anyway  ). Though I am beginning to think about leaving teaching in the next few years.

Seniority in the system is what matters, not your school. At least that is how I understand it.
I am thinking of leaving my school, not the system.
I have also toyed with the idea of leaving teaching all together. I have 15 years in. I am tired! I need something new!

i dont think it is a good time to leave any job. The market is still not in good shape and I dont trust that If I leave for smoething else I would have a job for very long. I cant chance not having the pay check. Id rather take my chances with my NYC teaching position. Hopefully I have enough time in that if they do cuts I wont be one of them.

This is the confusion. If principals have to cut teachers due to a lack of funds...they have to take the lowest according to seniority in the building.
But,... then you will try to find another job...which I hear is that you take anything you can no matter the borough.

I wouldnt leave the system right now.... if you are unhappy at your school, I would look in the open market, but going to LI means you dont have the security..... At least if next year you get excessed, you still have your benefits, tenure, salary, etc.... if you get excessed on LI, you have nothing. And from what I hear, people are getting excessed left and right from LI schools.

I just spoke to my principal on Friday about this and she said that seniority in the system is most important, then building, then license area. However, schools are not making the call, the DOE is. They are starting with 0 years in and moving their way up until they hit the magic number of teacher lay offs.
There are plenty of jobs out there and new teachers are not being hired.

Excessing is by senority (time in the DOE) but compared to other teachers in your school. It also goes by subject matter. I believe those who are not teaching with their license go first, then by subject area, then senority. If they had excessed in our school last year it would have been a guidance counselor who had many more years in the DOE than most subject area teachers.
