So It Looks Like The Police Will Stay But The Teacher's Will Go...
I just saw on the news this AM that Bloomberg ISN'T cutting the Police Officers but says TEACHERS WILL BE CUT, 6,700 of them
I really don't fear too much for "MY" job being I am finishing up my 10th year but one never knows and NOBODY can be too complacent right now.
Good luck to all of you!!!

In light of what just happened, it's good that police are not being cut, IMO. Plus, they were only going to lay off 800 or so.
BUT get this- the DOE is going to spend FIVE MILLION DOLLARS to RECRUIT new teachers, as it's about to lay off so many. I just do not understand that.

Not that it makes it so much better, but it says that the 6700 will include teachers lost by attrition. So hopefully many people will retire.
Although this pi$$ed me off:
Mr. Bloomberg is likely to hold Albany accountable for his plan to lay off, or lose through attrition, 6,700 teachers. “He’s going to be putting in very little money because he’s really upset with Albany,” one city official briefed on the budget said.
Basically he is using education to make a point to Albany...well that is just great!

Re: So It Looks Like The Police Will Stay But The Teacher's Will Go...
The Police Department can not take a cut. They just cannot. Recruiting is down class sizes are down, and after 20 yrs. officers are retiring. It just won't work. Summer in NYC is not fun. Too much crime and not enough police would be insane!
Yes, I am sad that the DOE is going to cut 6,700 jobs. I most likely will be one of them. With a weird license and only 5 yrs in, I can easily go.
Instead of cutting teachers, they should consider cutting school aides, supplies, etc....And, they should rethink the smaller school model. In the building I teach in, there are 6 schools. which means 6 principals at over 140,000 a piece and 18 APs. This building used to operate with 1 principal and 5 APs.
How is that cost effective?

The small school model has been a disaster! You are 100% right that it is not cost effective. We have gotten so top heavy with admins, even at the Tweed level.

DH's school has to let go of 6 out of the 20 teachers that they have now. It's so scary

How much of this is politics? Are we still 'playing the game?' or is there no hope? I understand that there will be cuts....but 6700??
Can the UFT do anything?

Bloomberg is totally playing games- with Albany, with the UFT. He wants senior/career teachers out and TFA/Fellows in. I don't know why he hasn't suggested a freeze because that would be so much better than layoffs. And again, he's shelling out all that money to recruit- why?

Im just so frustrated.
Do we think the layoffs will be less than 6700? is this a bargaining game?

to both of you; you are absolutely right.
ITA. I work in a small school, and while there are a lot of great things about the model, it's just not sustainable in NYC.
Cutting police and firefighters is a bad idea in any kind of economy. JMO.

Transitional B licenses will be the first to go. Those are the TFAers. But, if you really want to play the blame game blame Obama and Arnie Duncan. They are throwing Billions of dollars to TFA! There was an article in the NY Times recently about this.

all i know is that all these "stop listening to the teachers union" commercials are making me sick. sure, lets listen to people who dont know anything about education. people who dont know (or realize) that "teacher accountability" really means more testing.

IMO that's how it should be. I have worked with many TFA teachers and some are very good- but regardless, most of them do not stay. It would be unfair to keep them while people who have made teaching their career have to go.

This is huge problem. These small schools have been the BIGGEST waste of money. On top of one building have 5 principals and tons of AP's ...Klein threw money at them WASTEFULLY hoping it would make the school successful.
My friend worked at one in thr Bronx--every teacher got a laptop, she went on an all expense paid tri[ to Cali to learn about the bilingual program with SIX other people, worked COUNTLESS per session (where she did nothing) it is sickening how poorly managed this system is
