Is it me...?

...or does it annoy you when you get emailed random resumes (eg friends of family members) with no direction (actually not even a heads up phone call)... just like, here's my friend's resume! What can you do for him?

I work for a huge bank that has career opportunities listed on the website that they should look through first so I can direct the resume. Otherwise, am I supposed to research and find them something that's a fit and submit it for them? When I get things like that, it makes me inclined not to do anything with it because if you dont have the drive to look up the jobs we have available first or at least give me some specifics, I cant imagine how driven you'd be at my company and it would reflect on me Chat Icon

Sorry to vent but this seems to happen to me ALL the time...

Re: Is it me...?

I feel they are expecting you to do "favors" for them and recommend their friend, as an additional push to get into the door vs just sending a random resume via a website.

I would respond back with I wish I could help but the best thing to do is to go threw the online resume application,t hey don't accept resumes this way. Or something to that effect, it is very nervy especially if they r just emailing you without actually asking u if it is ok frist!

My issue is that I work for a huge bank and I don't know what kind of job it is these people I have never met are looking for! I have to submit the resume with direction on what job they're looking for so am I expected to FIND them a job that I think matches them based on their resume? Its not even like I am getting cover letters with them. Are they serious? I have no problem sending it in from my side to help them out and possibly improve their chances of getting in the door rather than just sending it themselves but give me some guidance here... I shouldnt have to do all the legwork on my end for these people I dont even know!

I would treat it as I would every other resume... if it doesn't have a letter or note attached with a job request, file it in the garbage.

Re: Is it me...?

I had an acquaintance -- as in an OLD friend I had not seen or spoken to in several years -- email me her cousin's resume. I had never in my life met her cousin. He apparently was in law school and wanted a summer position at my firm. She wanted me to give his resume to recruiting.

Um, seriously? Why would I put my name and reputation on the line for someone I've NEVER EVEN MET?! When I saw his resume, he didn't have the grades or anything else to get him a job here anyway... Regardless, that's not how my firm recruits summer associates anyway.

Then there are the friend's of my DH's parents... They live OOS like my in-laws, came to our wedding (the only time I've seen them), bounced a small check to us, and we never heard anything from them. (No apology - just radio silence.) A couple years later, they ask my ILs for my DH's email address. Their son was in law school in the city and we THOUGHT he just wanted to meet up with my DH or something to get some info on the city, etc. He didn't know anyone other than law school people. Anyway, they give their son my DH's email address. The son emails my DH to say "Yeah, I heard your wife is a lawyer at a huge firm in Manhattan and I was hoping she could help me get a job there."

Seriously? I don't know this kid from Adam and his parents haven't exactly been close (or even nice) to us.

My DH managed to politely decline and did say I'd be willing to discuss the profession and how to apply for jobs, etc. (He was just starting law school, so no way my firm would hire him anyway. We don't hire any interns unless they are done with 2 years of law school, except in extremely rare situations.) Needless to say, when he found out I wasn't just going to get him a job without ever meeting him, he didn't take me up on the offer.

I am consistently AMAZED at how many people have zero business sense and zero sense of business etiquette. It's truly APPALLING to me. Had either of these people just asked to meet me for coffee or come to my office to learn more about the practice of law, etc., I'd have been happy to mentor them. Once I got to know them better, I would be happy to pass along their resume if I felt they would be a good fit with my firm. I do NOT, however, pass along anyone's resume that I do not know personally and think would be a good fit.
