first choice for middle school

what happens if your child doesn't get 1st choice for middle school in nyc? is there any way to fight for it? he does not want to go the the 2nd choice school and frankly, neither do we after the open house.....any suggestions? tia

You should be entitled to whatever your zone is. With proof of address it should not be a problem. If you do not like your zone, but do like one in the area you can talk to you elementary school Principal about the possibility of a variance. They are always chaning the rules and regs for a variance but it is worth a shot--good luck.

thank you for your prompt response. according to the doe site, our district doesn't have any zoned ms - they are applications/interviews

the school he was admitted to takes twice as long to get to as his first choice and the public transportation would be 2 trains or 2 busses and a walk as opposed to 1 walk 1 bus... do you think that would qualify for a variance?

do they have to grant you your 1st choice w/a variance or do they pick the school closest to where we live (his third choice)?
