NYC Teachers.. question

Who holds onto and checks cumulative records?

In my school the teacher has the cumulative records for each student in her class in a metal box and we are required to check it for all proper documents 2 times a year, fill in the academic information etc..

I think it is ridiculous that I need to check to see if there is a birth certificate and proof of address.. i have better things to be doing.. I dont mind putting in academic info, but everything else should be left for clerical people.

I feel like the end of the year is just clerical BS

We used to have to do that but now we have a secretary that takes care of it all.

Funny- my colleague and I were just talking about records and grades. It used to take FOREVER to go through those "tin cans" as we called them, and update everything. I still can't believe that when I started in 96, that report cards were still being done by hand in my old school.

IMO, with all the money being spent on ARIS, etc. there is no reason for much of what's in those records to even exist. Most of it could/should be shredded. In fact, I bet if you check ARIS you will find ALL of the info that you are having to enter by hand. My kids' test scores and report card grades are on ARIS. I think ATS does the updates.

You should talk to your chapter leader- there is some kind of reduction in paperwork rule in place now.

At the beginning of the year, I go through them to make sure the white card and yellow card are in there. My secretary takes care of all that stuff. At the end of the year we just fill it out....thats about it.


Oh and I hold onto it the whole year.

We have it locked in our closet..we get them, add whatever we're told to, and leave them until we fill out yellow and white cards at the end of the year..the secretary takes care of making sure they are filled properly...I teach K and love when I am asked to make sure their addresses and phone numbers are correct..HOW am I supposed do that?!
