i posted a while ago... and things have gotten worse!
I adopted a cat about 3 months ago. I am totally in love with her. But i am having a major problem with her not using her litter box. At first, she was going in her litter box about 50% of the time. Then, she started going in it 100% of the time, for about a month. Now, she is using her litter box 0% OF THE TIME. She is going #1 and #2 on the floor, in thre same room as her litter box, but like 10 feet away.
I have taken her to a vet. Nothing is medically wrong with her.
Her litter is 100% clean, so that's not the problem. I have tried different brands of litter, and that hasn't helped, either.
Her litter is not close to her food. (I know some cats are particular about that.)
I guess she could be doing this out of spite, but i really don't know what she could be spiteful for.
Any other ideas or recommendations? I am at my wits end. I feel like i have tried everything. I am officially going to need some new carpets due to this kitty, and may never get the smell out of the room she has been going in. I can't go on like this
Thanks!

You can try putting several litter boxes around the house. I know its not the most attractive, but its better than it on the carpet.

what kind of box are you using? My cat prefers a "box" not a tray. Your cat may also be associating the carpeted area that it has been going in to be his litter box now. Can you put the litter box ON TOP of where the cat is going?

Thanks for the replies. Domino - that is exactly what I did - I put the litter box on top of where she went, the first time, but now she is going in all differenc places. And yes, I have a full litter box (with a roof), not just a tray.
I have never heard of anyone having this problem with a cat before. We have another cat, and she has NEVER gone anywhere but her litter box. I thought it just came naturally to cats!
(And btw, the two cats each have their own litter boxes, in separate rooms, so it's not b/c she doesn't want to share with her sister!)

Have you tried taking the top off the litter box? I had a cat that was scared to go into it, so I had to take off the top

With two cats, you should have three litter boxes. Try that and like someone suggested take the top off. It might be too small.
If that doesn't work you might have to re-train her.

Thanks - this may sound silly - but i've never actually "trained" a cat before - every cat I've known has just trained itself. How would I go about training her to use her litter?
