ETA- on closer reading it seems that this refers to contractual raises- I wonder if we will still get step increases. But it's good that there will be no layoffs.

There's still a 3% budget gap, but that's down from the origional 10% they were going to take.

Mulgrew says the teachers union has not agreed to the no raise for two years yet so I don't know what that means.

I got the impression that the Mayor does not have the authority to stipulate something like that. But I hope that Mulgrew agrees to it- I don't know anyone who wants to see layoffs. But Mulgrew is also pushing that retirement incentive- I think that's his baby- and in the union elections, the retirees love him. So maybe that's where his thinking is right now.

We should- as far as I know there is nothing in the contract stating that we won't.

I think that Bloomberg and Klein can say what they want, but nothing is official. We are in arbitration and have no contract...so they can't just say no raises.

This is just a way for Bloomberg to push his agenda. Now if we don't agree to this we look greedy and terrible to the public. He knows that he can't just make this decision...but he wanted it out there. Layoffs would be a nightmare for him and it would make his precious test scores drop.

I don't disagree with a pay freeze, but I do disagree with being strongarmed by the Mayor. I don't think that Mulgrew should roll over and just say yes b/c it sets a bad precident. This needs to be decided in arbitration. The Mayor is an arrogant a$$.

This is a great article of how Bloomberg or as my uft rep referred to him as numbnuts can freeze salary without the UFT's permission.

Re: DOE Teachers- no raises for 2 years, but no layoffs

I wonder if this year will count towards one of the 2 years? Because we worked with out a contract this entire year.

In addition, I think that they should have laid off the teachers. I would have loved to have seen how the schools were going to handle 40 kids in a classroom. It would have made for great news!

But, not for nothing, the UFT has no cajones! Shoot, I was on strike when I worked for the Archdiocese in 2001! Now, that is having cajones!

So basically a salary freeze really means continue under the current contract. I think that we should do that instead of sign a contract that sux.

Bloomberg is putting a Freeze on something that never really exsited in the first place. We never agreed to 2%.

All the give backs they want for 2% are not worth it. Longer days, longer school year, merit pay, 5 less sick days....not worth 2%.

I was thinking this today too. Announcing this was a brilliant move on Bloomberg's part. If the UFT fights it, you're right - we're going to look awful. The press would have a field day.

But in reality, layoffs are as bad for the remaining teachers as they are for kids. Lots of coorporations have taken pay freezes or even reductions in order to keep their jobs.

But yeah, Bloomberg is an arrogant PITA.

ITA with everything you said. Mulgrew needs to show some spine. People are pi$$ed- not with the freeze, but with the fact that we are just rolling over. Extended day is a complete and utter joke and if the DOE wanted to be fair, they'd end it.

End extended day?...I am sure by the time these contract negociations are over we will be working longer hours and a longer school year! Every time we get this supposed "raise" we are giving up way to much and the raise is just money for working a longer year!
