punish a cat?

Okay, this may be a weird question. But my cat constantly tries jumping on top of DH's monitor.. which would be fine.. except its a flat screen.. and shes almost broken it about 3 times.

Today she jumped on it and smacked it down and completely broke his keyboard -- she's too fast for me to stop midway.

Is there anyway to get her to stop doing this? Or to "punish" her so she knows she did a bad thing?

I never had a cat before. With our old dog if we yelled at him he knew he did a bad thing and stopped doing it.. cats just seem so uncaring and I don't know what to do short of buying a new monitor thats not a flat screen.

Re: punish a cat?

This used to work on my first dog... not sure if it will work on a cat. But any time the pooch would do something wrong, we would spray him with water from a spray bottle.

It stopped him.

Re: punish a cat?

I heard about the spraying technique also. Cats are hard headed. No matter how many times you yell at them they still come back to that same spot you kicked them out of. Cats are so spiteful...Chat Icon

I was going to suggest the squirt bottle too.

Re: punish a cat?

when she was a kitten i used to do it whenever she did something wrong. it never really had a big impact on her and i think she got to the point where she started liking the water.

i would go back to trying it again but the only problem is i dont want to spray her by the monitor cause i'm afraid of the water on the monitor... and if i move her and then spray her isn't that defeating the whole purpose?

so confused.

Fill a can up with pennies. Everyitime she jumps, shake the can. Cats hate the noise.

Re: punish a cat?

it will look strange, but put tin foil on top of the monitor.
they hate the feel of tin foil and will learn not to go where it is.

My cats hate the sound of plastic bags so I shake them whenever they are plotting something evil.

Re: punish a cat?

I don't think anything works, at least not with the cats I know anyway. My sis and her DH have a kitten and they've tried the water bottle time and time again, but he just doesn't get it and it does nothing to stop his bad behavior.... I know the pennies in the can worked to startle Golem when he was doing something bad, maybe that would work on a cat as well? Also, is your monitor new? Your kitty might just be trying to explore it, and maybe once she's checked it out, she'll leave it alone?

Try putting double sided tape on the monitor, my cats hate the feel of it on their paws.

You could also try the cat repellant spray- it works, but you have to keep reapplying it every other day.

The spray bottle works! That's what we use.

Re: punish a cat?

My cats don't respond to the water bottle either. We stomp on the ground to scare them or shake plastic bags.
