resigning from your job
alot of people that i talk to think i'm crazy. right now i am very unhappy at work. i worked for a company that was bought out by a bank. many of my co-workers and my old boss resigned to work elsewhere. i do get to work from home 1x a week. however, not happy with the company as a whole, i am tired of commuting to the city, and eventually we will end up in jersey city. i do want to start looking. however, my family thinks i'm crazy to want to resign in this econcomy and start from the bottom elsewhere. i know its tough out there. however, every week there is a resignation so things must be opening up.
should i at least stick out until we move to jersey city? should i start now? i know it won't be easy but i am miserable 90% of the time. i feel bad complaining knowing so many people are out of work

Re: resigning from your job
I personally wouldn't quit without having something else lined up, but I am a strong advocate for ALWAYS looking even if you LIKE your job. You just never know what other opportunities are out there.
You also have to consider the whole package. Maybe something else might pay less, but have better benefits, let you work from home more, less stress, etc.

Re: resigning from your job
I've quit a job without having another one twice now...it is a scary thing but depending on the type of job you are looking for its not impossible to find a new one. I've found wo in admin.
If its making you that miserable then you need to determine if giving up current income is worth it in the short term.
I would definitely start sending out resumes, do not wait until your company moves to Jersey City because it can take a few months before you actually find anything. You can always say on job interviews that you are currently looking b/c the company is moving.

Re: resigning from your job
is there any negotiating with working from home?
When DH's company moved to Jersey City he negotiated working from home 3 then 4 now 5 days a week. He used the idea that the company would not be able to contact him for 4 hours every day while he was commuting.

Re: resigning from your job
i would definitely look for something else. Im in the same situation sort of. trying to find a more flexible or part time job to be home more with DS; and get rid of 4 hours of commute time a day (not to mention the cost). but im not going to quit until i have something else lined up.
i've been sending resumes out since may and not 1 phone call. My resume is pretty good, professionally written and im applying for basic admin jobs..jobs that im way qualified to do. and nothing

sorry to hear that.are you looking into just one particular field? are you trying to get something on LI? i wouldn't mind working in midtown manhattan. my commute would be ok. but i just would like to work at a company i like. its just weird because alot of my co-workers are leaving. i'm just so confused.

Re: resigning from your job
I did it when I was miserable, I had no job to go to but I had to do it for my own sake.

I've never quit a job without having another one, even if I hated it.
