Our first choice has no openings
DS is speech and language delayed. We are in the process of transitioning from EI to CPSE.
He will get full day center based program, speech, OT and PT starting in september.
Right now he is 1/2 days at Brookville center Marcus ave. We were looking to change our placement for various reasons. Of COURSE they have an opening so if worse comes to worse, I guess he'll just stay there.
We REALLLLLY wanted him at Mill Neck Manor Early Childhood Center. He needs an 8-1-2 setting but they only have openings in a 12-1-2. I'm soooo disappointed!
Barbara C. Wilson has a waiting list as well. The woman at mill neck recommended Little Village or BOCES. I just feel so defeated because I have to go back to the school district and send out more packages. Also, we're in mineola and I really didn't want to put him on the school bus for a long distance or on the highway. Why is everything so DIFFICULT???

Re: Our first choice has no openings
We going through this right now. Little Village has no openings for full day and from the conversation I had with someone there, I am not even sure they have 1/2 day anymore.
At this point, I would just call the schools directly and ask them if they have openings and if they will do a screening. I spoke with the schools that our district was sending packets to and they hadn't arrived yet. I wasn't going to wait around for the district to get things moving.

Re: Our first choice has no openings
Little Village isnt even screening anymore for full day or half day.
BOCES is a collaborative model, where all services are done in class.
BCW has about 10-12 wait listed already.
our children with later birthdays get the short end of the stick.
we are going through the same thing... but we got a spot for our #1 school but may actually now after seeing BOCES turn it away.
we have been 100% set on going to our #1 school, but the more and more we think about it, the more and more we like the BOCES model.
your best bet right now is to accept what you can get, and start applying for next year.
it is more frustrating than college.

If it makes you feel better it's not just because of children with late birthday.
I talked to our CPSE chairman about the situation. There is just not even room in any school for FT programs and lower ratios.
We started our process in December. I was told by everyone that we were EARLY. Yeah, right! Our packet mailed out in Feb. There was already no room by the time the school called me for screening.
Little Village gives priority to their children in PT program who could not got FT last year. They would not even do a screening for DS in March.
Barbara C Wilson: They had "1" opening for the year for DS ratio. So we were lured to think otherwise when we met with them in January. There never was an opening for his ratio.
Variety.: No room by March.
The truth is there are no openings. Just a hand full each year.
So at our CPSE meeting I discussed it. There are only a hand full of opening for FT programs. School really have more PT programs. The Chairman agreed. There is really no FT programs available for anyone coming off the street.
This is a real joke!
So everyone ends up at Boces because they have the room and they can open more classes if needed.
AND like I said, we started in December.

I met someone the other day who's son is in the BOCES program in Bellmore and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about it.

Re: Our first choice has no openings
If anyone remebers, I was in the situation regarding JAcob last year... By the time I had my CPSE meeting many places were closed out... I did get to be 2nd on the waiting list at Variety but it never panned out...
I also did not want Jacob at a full time program that was a long bus ride which limited our choices...
Needless to say- he did not get in anywhere.. THe school district ( which was Syosset) had to give us services that would benefit him and that would equal what he would get in a special neeeds setting.. This worked for us...
Take a deep breath and hopefully everything will work out..

Re: Our first choice has no openings
Our first choice was oprioginally Little Village. They would not even screen Emma for a placement. I had gone to an open house at BC Wilson. DD was screened there and I was told their was a wait list but there was something I didnt care f about it ( no offense). I went to Boces Readiness Center in Bellmore and Emma was screened and accepted. I think it is the best fit for her and have heard nothing but good things. I also love that they dont have pull outs!
I agree. The whole process was very stressful!

this just made me smile even more with our decision. i love how the setting is more or less a "real" school atmosphere. we also liked how they venture out to community settings with the children.

that does make me feel 100% better, thanks....
DS was accepted in LV (hes an Aug bday) but we know ppl, and in the end we still chose BOCES.
BCW we were #8 on the wait list for the 8:1:2 class
he was even wait listed for the school he goes to now... that is a joke, bc we were told he was guaranteed a spot for next year, bc he goes this year. LoL.. that is a whole other story to tell.. every kid in his class (8 others) got a spot into next years program. i wasnt going to send him, but i still thought it was funny.
it is a joke these private schools, but i guess thats what happens...

Re: Our first choice has no openings
I think HASC still has openings. Not sure if it is a good fit for your child.

Re: Our first choice has no openings
It is in Woodmere. Here is the link HASC
It's a good school for children with PDD/ASD/Development Delays. I know several families who have children either going now or in the past and they have had a lot of success. GL
