Giving up a dog
We have an almost 2yo Female Golden Retriever that we have to rehome for various reasons. I have contacted Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue but does anybody have any other suggestions? My DH is very upset that she might go to the rescue because he's afraid where she might end up. Any other suggestions?

Re: Giving up a dog
you could put an ad on petfinder.com and interview all the families. you could also require references and a home inspection. you don't know anyone who wants her?
that's a really hard decision to give away your dog

We've asked everyone we know and no one can take her right now. We are all heartbroken and just want a good home for her.

Re: Giving up a dog
you could try to find a family to take her on craigslist.. that's how I found my dog.
Maybe even someone on here knows someone looking for a dog..

Re: Giving up a dog
Oftentimes, rescues do much more in the way of investigation than any other method including shelters. The home inspection and adoption fee flushes out the kind of people who adopt bait dogs for dogfighting rings or who intentionally harm them for their own sick amusement. It sounds far fetched but there are stories in Newsday all the time about it, and many that my rescue told me.
I'd check out the rescue and make sure they have such standards and stick with them. If they say they can absolutely not take them, research no-kill shelters that have strict adoption guidelines.
The problem with individuals is that you never know where the dog is going, no matter how nice they seem.
Good luck finding the dog a loving, caring forever home.

They actually removed the site on craigslist.. Said too many people were trying to dump their animals. I was looking for it the other day because we had to rehome our cat.
ETA: Maybe ask your vet if you can hang signs there, Hang signs at your local library and also Petco.

I agree...I would go the route of a rescue. They are SUPER strict. Most even include a legal clause that if the new adoptive family needed to give up the dog at any point, they by law would have to go back to the rescue.
