DINING out(side)
For a refreshing summer meal, there's no better setting than a restaurant patio

July 6, 2005

On clear July days, the stars come out at restaurants from the East River to Montauk. It's alfresco season, and meals are served with a summer breeze.

In style, the eateries range from elegant perches with views of skyscrapers, the ocean or the Sound to more modest spots along country roads and heavily trafficked streets.

Root against rain and pick yours in Queens, Nassau or Suffolk. Here's a sampler.

QUEENS

ASTORIA: A large, open-air dining area with a garden effect is a highlight at Cavo, a buoyant Greek restaurant at 42-18 31st Ave., 718-721-1001. Not far from there, Le Sans Souci (44-09 Broadway, 718-728-2733) offers escargots at tables that spill onto Broadway.

LONG ISLAND CITY: Water's Edge (East River and 44th Drive, 718-482-0033) serves the Manhattan skyline. Savor it from the deck, along with the restaurant's artfully prepared, expensive new American food.

A dramatic view from the outdoor patio is part of the appeal of Riverview (2-01 50th Ave., 718-392-5000), a handsome, modernist establishment on the waterfront. The new American food is excellent; the appointments, entertaining on their own.

NASSAU

BAYVILLE: Pine Island Grill, Crescent Beach Club (333 Bayville Ave., 516-628- 3000) is situated above a curve of Long Island Sound, fine for a summer afternoon or evening. Down the road, Pier One (33 Bayville Ave., 516- 628-2153) is known for lobster with sea breezes on the side.

EAST MEADOW: The Palm Court (516-542-0700) in the Carltun complex in Eisenhower Park has an ambitious continental menu. On the outdoor patio, dine amid flowers while watching golfers at play on the nearby course.

ISLAND PARK: Very relaxed and to the point, Artie's South Shore Fish (4257 Austin Blvd., 516-889-0692), is a seafood shop with fine fish and outdoor seating.

For a mix of Southwestern and Caribbean dishes, try the updated Coyote (104 Waterview Rd., 516-889-8009). Near Coyote is one of the Island's better seafood houses, Paddy McGee's (6 Waterview Rd., 516-431-8700). Befitting their addresses, both do have views overlooking Reynolds Channel.

LONG BEACH: Long Beach is home to Duke Falcon's Global Grill (36 W. Park Ave., 516-897-7000), a spirited joint with some Asian and Latin rhythms. Get a sidewalk table on West Park Avenue and view the local action.

MERRICK: At Cucina Bay in Merrick (3100 Whaleneck Dr., 516-378-7495), a contemporary seaside seafood restaurant, you can gaze out at passing sailboats while dining on sesame tuna tatki salad or penne pescatore.

PORT WASHINGTON: The reborn Louie's Oyster Bar and Grille (395 Main St., 516-883-4242) specializes in seafood and outdoor dining with a harbor view. Steamers and beer are the best you'll get.

SUFFOLK

AMAGANSETT: Pacific East (415 Main St., 631-267-7770) continues to star with pan-Asian and full-Hamptons' flair. Enjoy both out front at a patio table. The Hampton Chutney Company (Amagansett Square, 631-267-3131) offers dosas, or Indian crepes, on picnic tables. Another topnotch picnic-style spot is La Fondita (74 Montauk Hwy., 631-267-8800) for fine authentic Mexican dishes. The unceremonious Lobster Roll (1980 Montauk Hwy., 631-267-3740), identifiable by the flag and the crowded parking lot, makes its namesake treat and crisp fried seafood, to be eaten indoors or out. The popular Clam Bar (2025 Montauk Hwy., 631-267-6348) serves the raw and the cooked right out on the Napeague stretch.

BAY SHORE: Fatfish (28 Cottage Ave.; 631-666-2899) is waterside and alfresco, with a new American- continental kitchen.

BRENTWOOD: There's no shortage of surprises at Pine Aire Fish & Deli (140 Pine Aire Dr., 631-231-4467), where you can enjoy expertly prepared Salvadoran seafood under an awning in the restaurant's backyard.

CENTERPORT: On Route 25A, The Shack (1 Stony Hollow Rd., 631-754-8989) is a very informal seasonal outpost for burgers and raw clams. Mill Pond House (437 E. Main St., 631-261-7663) serves a water view along with a solid menu of steaks and seafood, indoors and out.
