SS Teachers - A few questions

I was looking through my transcripts and realized I had a ton of SS electives! I know SS jobs are hard to find but if I can get certified for very little cost do you think its worth to add it to my collection?

I looked at the state website and it said 30 credits in SS electives. This is what I have.

3 credits Macroeconomics
3 credits Sociology of Work
3 credits Microeco
3 credits Western Civ I
3 credits Sociology of Family
4 credits World Religion
4 credits Union & Public Policy
4 credits Western Civ II

Which is 27 credits. Technically I would only need 1 more class plus pass the SS test.

Do you know if they take business law classes for ss credits? If so, I have another 7 credits there.

What do you think?

Not sure Jen, but SS jobs are also hard to come by. What about Science or Spec. Ed?

Chat Icon I don't mean to be discouraging, just know so many SS teachers with no jobs. :( Chat Icon

Re: SS Teachers - A few questions

are you sure it's 30 credits? I thought it was 36, but that was 14 years ago, when I was certified.

business law is not a SS, but the others look like they are. since you are so close, you might as well get it, but you run into the danger of 1. not having experience teaching SS (since PP mentioned, so many SS teachers are out of work with experience) and 2. having too many credits and too expensive to hire.

Re: SS Teachers - A few questions

I was just trying to think of ways to make myself more marketable. I don't necessarily want to teach SS but the fact that I am very close I didn't know if it would look good to have a 3rd certification.

I considered looking into other areas, but I would need all 30 - 36 credits. If I am going to invest that much money I would rather invest in an administration degree.

I was on the state website last night and I could have sworn it said 30 but maybe my eyes are still a little cloudy from the lasik because a 0 could easily look like a 6.

Re: SS Teachers - A few questions

It's 30 credits. I got my English Language Arts certification the same way. I just happened to look at my transcript and realized that I had a lot of English courses.

You have to bring all transcripts to BOCES and they decide when they evaluate your transcripts what counts.

I ended up with 27 credits after my transcripts were evaluated by BOCES. I actually had 30, but NYS places a limit on the amounts of some types of classes that will count toward the 30, so I just had to get the 3 credits again.

If you click on where it says 30 credits -SS in TEACH, it will tell you what types of classes will count.

Bottom line though, is that BOCES will have the final say over what classes will count towards a SS certification.
