I found Inkmesh.com which allows you to search for the best prices on eBooks.

It compares Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Sony ebookstore, and others for the lowest prices.

Nice little search engine that I hadn't seen mentioned here so I thought I'd pass it along.

I thought that the Nook couldn't read ebooks purchased from Sony or Amazon, and similar for the Kindle (nothing from BN or Sony) and the Sony Reader.

I'm still not sure if I want to get one and am trying to learn everything I can before I decide.

I think so too.

I personally am so glad I picked the nook. I have been downloading books from the library. The only other one that works for the library is the Sony. The kindle is not compatible with your local library. That was the deciding factor for me. I can read lots of free books all the time.

Amazon has their own proprietary format so you can only buy books from Amazon. The Nook can read ePub format; which is basically the format of most ebook retailers BESIDES amazon.

For the nook you can get epubs from B&N, Kobo, Sony Ebook store, ereadable, fictionwise, etc. You can't download from those stores automatically from the device - you need to do it on a computer and move it over via USB; but to save myself cash I don't have a problem with that.

Nook can also use formats from the public library, as smdl said. I am downloading from suffolkwave and I just sent my application for the Philadelphia library this morning. (15 dollars and they have 1500+ books available to download.)

Thanks! I'm leaning toward the wifi nook, so having to move the books over via USB isn't a big deal to me at all.

My local library here in Nassau is EPUB format. It's free to join the library and for the downloads.

Yep between free in Suffolk (home) free in Nassau (we are allowed to have a card in the town where our office is) and the 15.00 card for Philly I hope to not buy a book for a long, long while...

Go Nook!
