Luke Edward's long birth story

Let me begin by saying that the birth of my son couldn't be more different from the birth of my daughter. The only things they have in common are that they took place at the same hospital, both were vaginal and without an epidural. Otherwise, they were on opposite ends of the spectrum.

I woke up on June 23rd, sometime around 4 am with contractions. I didn't realize until the second one that the first one was a contraction, but then I started paying attention. I didn't open my eyes until 4:19 when I realized they were strong enough that they should be timed. They were coming every 10 minutes... DD woke up at 5:00 and I brought her to bed with me like always... by 5:30 I decided lying down was too painful so I got up.

I called my mother and told her what was happening...she asked me if I was going to bring DD to day care... day care doesn't open until 7:30 and I guess I knew that was too long to wait so she said she'd come over and take DD to day care. DH showered and dressed, I got DD dressed.

Around this time my DD started going crazy. Just getting into everything - it's pretty safe to say she felt the energy and the tension... I suppose that contraction that hurt enough to make me yell out "f*ck" didn't help the situation.

I called the hospital and when the doctor asked me how far apart my contractions were (I stopped timing them once I got out of bed) I just said they come as fast as my daughter can get into trouble. Apparently, this doctor knows 2 year olds because she told me to come to the hospital right then. I think having a contraction while I was on the phone may have encouraged her to say that.

When I finally jumped in the shower my DH came in and asked me why my mother was coming over when he could just take her to day care. Again I say that they don't open until 7:30 and he says "but your water didn't even break yet."

Men. Love them and their silliness. Chat Icon Chat Icon

After I got dressed I called my mother to tell her to HURRY UP... the pain was pretty intense. DH said "when they get here I'll go gas up the car" and I gave him a look... and said GO. NOW.

Have I mentioned that this was Wednesday morning, I live in Brooklyn and my hospital is 30-45 minutes away without traffic. Has there ever been a weekday morning without traffic? I didn't think so. Chat IconChat Icon

So onto the hospital.

It took an hour to get there. I was contracting as we pulled into the valet area (thank god for valet parking) and the guy who took the car had the good sense to bring me a wheelchair -- which I tried to refuse because... well, I'm like that. I don't know how to accept help and half the time I can't even recognize that I need it until I'm desperate. But DH was like - stop being ridiculous and get in the wheelchair. Okay.

As I was being wheeled into the elevator, I sent my father a text to tell him I was at the hospital. It was 8:18 am.

We went up to the delivery floor, dealt with the information, then refused to be wheeled into triage because I'm not sick (and I said that)... so I walked in (contracting) laid down on a table, while putting on the hospital gown... they checked me and I was already 10cm...

They wheeled me into the delivery room (I started to cry when I saw my OB -- I hated the doctor who delivered DD so I was so happy to see him), I refused the epidural (to the shock and horror of the nurses and anesthesiologist)... my doctor broke my water and we were ready to go...

The first contraction came, 3 pushes... doctor and DH telling me the baby is right there.

I was thinking right there??? What do you mean right there? I said so you mean I'm having this baby within the hour?

The doctor said you can have this baby with your next push...

I said I'm not ready to give birth! (I pushed for 3 hours with DD)

Doctor said he's ready so it's not up to you...

I said okay, let me get my head ahead of the contractions....

The second contraction came, first push, second push and then...

He was born. 8:44 am. Wonderful loud cry. And for the third time in my life, I fell in love at first sight. Chat Icon Chat Icon
