Backpacks and School Supplies?
I cant believe this stuff is out already. I really cant believe that I have almost all the requested supplies. We haven't looked at backpacks yet and that brings me to my question.
When did your DC make the switch from the character to the non character backpacks? DS is going into 2nd and "thinks he wants a Mario backpack" I have been allowing the character backpacks because they are only little for a short time yada yada... I would rather spend the money on a good Jansport or Lands End that will last a few years.

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
I teach second grade, and aside from a few HS Musical and Hannah Montana backpacks, there were NO character bags in my class this past year. I broke the news to my own soon to be second grader that characters are out this year. He picked a camo backpack instead.

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
In first grade, I switched them from a character to a non-character bag. I just bought my kindergartner a red bag from LLBean with a shark on it, but he keeps looking at an Iron Man one - lol

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
I let the boys decide when they wanted to go 'non-character'. Robbie started with a plain backpack in Kindergarten and Noah moved to non-character in 1st grade.
I also got a good portion of what's on the list.. but I notice it never seems to protect me from having to go crazy later anyway. The teachers have so far always sent additional requests for their specific classes in late August and sometimes MORE requests in September. I looooove battling the crowds!

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
This year DS will be getting a non character bag. DS will be going to 3rd grade.
He doesn't mind and think the camo and other bags are cooler.

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
My DS is going into 1st grade and he's going to be using the same navy blue Lands' End backpack he got when he started school at age 3!! It's still a good size, but I debate at this time getting him a "bigger" one. It will still be from Lands' End! No character pack backs here! The only choice they may get it color!

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
I bought Jacob the other day a Toy Story 3 backpack. He asked couldn't say no. He will be entering kindergarten so I least now I know it is still cool to do so.
I was wondering- do I need to buy a lunchbox too? if so- do I buy a soft one with characters on it too??
With regards to supplies. We received in the mail through PTA a fundraiser where they buy all the supplies. I think it was $39. I decided to do it. I am also going to buy extra stuff to keep in the house if heruns out.

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
Aw, this thread is making me sad for some reason.
DD will be going into kindergarten this year. I will allow her to get whatever backpack she wants. She had Ariel in nursery and Hello Kitty for pre-k. I hope she wants a character until she's in high school! Just today she said she thinks she might want a Dora theme for her 5th b-day in September saying, "Even though it's for little kids, I think I'm still going to like her then..." Oh, also, I LOVED picking out a new backpack every year in school...I'd probably have been bummed if my mom wanted to recycle my old one for several years...JMO, of course!
As for supplies, I can't get myself into the "school spirit" mood in July. I can't see myself shopping for any of it for another month.

I would be too, and I definitely think my DD falls into this category (she'll want a new one each year). my son is another story. he doesn't care at all. he's comfortable with the familiar, so having the same backpack every year is no issue! I'm actually debating getting him a new one that's a tad bigger.
I didn't think I'd shop for school supplies year yet either, but I was in Target today and they had the crayons, glue sticks, pencils for like 20-cents, 25-cents, etc... so I already got the supplies for DS and 1st grade!

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
If you guys can get involved in the PTA, you should help set up a program where for a flat fee, parents can purchase school supplies through a local business and the store boxes it up and the kids get it the first day of school or you pick it up early.
The school district I work in does this and it is really great. My home district just started this year and I was so happy!

That is a great price! I wish our supplies only cost $39. I've been hitting the sales and I'm not even done yet - already up to about $20 and a lot more to go.
As for backpacks, I let DS choose this year as it's kindergarten (chose superheroes). We just bought at TRU and they give you a free lunch box with it (chose the police car). When he's older and has to carry more, I plan to get something more sturdy. I'm hoping this one lasts the year!

Re: Backpacks and School Supplies?
Wow I thought more kids would use character backpacks througout elementary school.
My DD is going into Pre-K and she wants a princess bag, so I plan on getting her one. I'll probably let her decided when to stop getting characters even though I'm hoping to have a few more years of the characters!
Why are kids growing up so fast?
I remember being in elementary school and bringing toys with me to play with for recess.

We only stopped character bags b/c we needed a thicker better made bag. the character ones are cheap and don't last very long. She got a regular jasport in 3rd grade when she had more books to carry around. For us it wasn't b/c she is "too cool" to walk around with a wizards of waverly place back pack.....it's b/c she needs something that's going to last the entire school year with lots of space and zippers.
