Can I ask some questions about crate training?

Our girl is coming home Friday Chat Icon and I have a few questions:

1. She gets fed one scoop of food in the morning and once at night. I don't plan on leaving food down for her all day, but how long should I leave the food down so I know she has enough time to eat it?

2. Do I provide water for her inside the crate?

3. Would you put a dog bed/blanket inside the crate or is that a bad idea? She is housebroken but has had a couple of accidents.

Thanks!

1) I would leave it about a half hour to 45 mins, but I am not an expert on this as my dog's are bad eaters and I leave it too long.

2) Yes, for sure, but keep in mind she will have to urinate so don't leave her in the crate for more than 4 or so hours without a bathroom break.

3) Bed and blanket...I would def leave some comfy things in there, hoping she won't "go" in there but prepare for the worst, if you kwim.

But much of this is what I would do. See what the general consensus is when others post.

1. When Daisy was crated, if she didn't eat her breakfast before we went to work, the food bowl was lifted and put on the counter until we came home. However, we would put a kong treat in her kong, so she had to work at getting some food.

2. Yes, provide water, but if possible, use one of those upright water holders that you can measure how much you put in and how much is left when you come home from work.

3. We gave Daisy a cloth mat in her crate and when she had accidents, it would get washed. If the crate is big enough, buy one that is small enough to fit half the crate and leave the other half empty. If she does have an accident, she'll more than likely go where there is no soft bed/blanket. Dogs don't like to mess up where they sleep.

Good luck!

Re: Can I ask some questions about crate training?

Congratulations! I'm so happy for you and your new family member. Chat Icon

1. Mine go through theirs in 3 minutes, but the breed is known for that. She may not give you a chance to worry about this and eat it all right away. But if it was me, 15 minutes would be it. If you leave it too long, you'll be teaching her that she controls her food which is actually a training challenge.

2. It depends on how long she'll be in it. If it's all day while you're at work, I would, but not an overflowing bowl. That will get easier when you learn more about how much she drinks versus how often she needs to go out. If it's overnight while she sleeps, I wouldn't. I would definitely feed her in the crate, at least in the beginning too.

3. Not until she proves she can be trusted in the crate. We practiced the approach with new dogs that they get little to no trust until they earn it. It's easier to give trust little by little than it is to give it all and then take it away. Not to mention, it's dangerous to leave things in the crate that they can choke on. Both my dogs have ripped things apart in the crate, so there is nothing in mine but the tray liner. They can take it. Chat Icon

Thank you all so much! Betsy, I assume by upright water bottle you mean one that is like the larger version of a hamster/rabbit water bottle? That is a great idea, I will have to look into that.

Re: Can I ask some questions about crate training?

I am nervous to post my reply because it seems very different. But this is what we do based on our vets recommendations who we adore and trust. Each time I bring my girls he spends an hour with me answering all of my questions and offering advice. I do not think any of the suggestions that were posted are bad but mine seem rather strict compared lol

1) I was told 15-20 minutes. If they eat, great. If not, they will eat the next time the food is put down and will also learn to eat when the food is placed in front of them the next time. This will help them get used to the schedule.

2) No water in the crate. The dog will drink and then have to urinate. In the morning we give our doggies food and water. Then they play outside for a little while. When they come in, we put them in the crate and give them a treat (kong) before we leave. We practically never had accidents. The doggies sleep the whole time practically. They each have their own crate.

3) I originally bought fleece blankets for them but was discouraged by the vet and the breeder actually because they said that anything that absorbs liquid will promote them urinating in their crate (in the beginning). This held true for us. When I had a towel in there one of my pups would pee in it and could care less. With out the towel/blanket, the urine would get all over her which she did not like. So, she started holding it. Now, after weeks w/o accidents ... she has a comfy blanky!

P.S. It is a pain in the but to wash the blankys, toys, crate, and them when they pee so I really wanted to brake that habit.

Hope this is helpful!

Re: Can I ask some questions about crate training?

1. Our puppy eats in seconds so I never have problems with when to take the food away

2.We do not put water in the crate. He drink in the am, then at lunchtime and then all evening.

3. At night he gets his bed but during the day he gets no bed cause he chewed it.....we left him with nothing then gave him a towel.

He has only had maybe 3 accidents in his crate and he is 6 mons now.

As general rule of thumb all of the above is great. In addition, when crate training, the crate should be just large enough for the pup to turn around in it. Anything larger will allow a "wet" area and a "dry" area. You want to discourage accidents in the crate, not allow for them.

If you need any further advice, please feel free to FM me.

I have a pen, not a crate. We're only crating Pickles overnight. You have to leave water out for them all day. Your puppy might be a good eater and you might not need to even worry about leaving the food out. Pickles food bowl is empty in 5.6 seconds. That's a guesstimate, I never actually timed it. When he's crated overnight I'll leave an ice cube in there for him so he can lick it if he gets thirsty. Last, I'd definitely line the crate with something.

I leave the food down for a reasonable amount of time, basically until I have to leave, they always eat it right away. but if they don't eat, and its time for you to leave, they will learn

Water in the crate- I wouldn't. unless you can let the dog out throught out the day, your asking for accidents. Until you know how long your dog can hold its bladder, I wouldn't do this. Some dogs like my tiny pug can hold it for hours on end. The new huge puppy can't wait more then 2 or 3 hours.

As for a blanket or towel, if you can, put the dog in the crate while your home with a blanket or towel and keep checking on the dog. If it rips it up or chews on it remove it and you know your answer.
I wouldn't leave it in there until you know they won't shred it or rip it apart. it will cause more harm to them then good
