Sigh...I hate firing people

I recognize that they are having it worse being on the receiving end...and I'd never tell them how truly draining it is to terminate people as it certinly shouldnt enter the conversation.

But this truly is heartwrenching.

Seeing their faces when the news finally sinks in.
The catch in their voice when they're speaking.

It truly sucks. While it's easier when it's warranted, it's still not easy.

Sometimes being in HR sucks.

I can't vent to anyone at my job because it's not the right forum.

I completely agree with you on this. It is draining and there has been times that I go into the ladies room stall after the conversation and cry. On a similar note, I feel like it is worse to tell a room full of people that their positions are being eliminated. It's almost like you can feel the bad/sad energy all around you.

i'm sure your empathy comes through and is appreciated on some level.

why can't you vent to your colleagues? wouldn't they understand being in the position of also having to fire ppl? Or maybe your manager. or at the very least, if your company has an EAP hotline you can call for a little emotional support

Barb - you can vent to me...I had to do it yesterday - ON MY BIRTHDAY

We do a 90 day eval here and I think the guy walked into my office thinking I would say he was ok but needs to improve his attendance and reliability going forward, etc.

His face was

HATE IT!
