Questions for Bunny owners
DH & I are thinking about getting a bunny (we aren't allowed dogs in our apt complex).
-Are they expensive (food, etc.)?
-How big of a crate would we need?
-I was told that you can teach them to go in a litter box, true?
-Can they be left alone for several hours during the day?
-Any specific type to get?
I hate being pet-less, I need something
Any info would be great!!

We have three bunnies. They are good pets but just make sure you are ready for a nice long commitment with one. They can live into their teens.
Food:Their diet should mainly consist of hay. We buy a big 25lb box for about $40 and it lasts us a little over a month (but that's with 3 buns). We also buy a 10lb bag of pellets (they get 1/4 cup only in the morning) and that lasts a good while too.
Crate: You want to make sure that your bunny has plenty of room, especially if they are going to be in the crate most/all of the time. We bought an exercise pen (like for a small dog) and they have lots of room. If the bun is going to be allowed out and only going to be in the crate to sleep, it doesn't need to be that big. Just make sure you can fit the litter box, food and water bowl and they have some space to lay down.
Litter Box: Absolutely true. You put the hay in the litter box and they will automatically go there.
When you say "leave them for several hours", do you mean in the crate or roaming around the apt? If it is the latter, you just have to make sure you "bunnyproof" everything...they will chew wires especially. If you mean in the crate, absolutely. They are like cats...very self sufficient.
There's no specific type to get; the best way is to rescue one where you can get to know a little about their background/personality. Some bunnies like to be held, most don't. A great site to check out is The House Rabbit Society at www.rabbit.org. They have a wealth of information about house rabbits as well as adoption info. You should also make sure that there is a vet near you that specializes in rabbits...most vets don't and bunnies are not like dogs and cats. You can find this info on the site as well. We take ours to Dr. Saver in New Hyde Park. She is amazing!

Renee pretty much said it all. We have a bunny and we absolutely adore him. He is a Dutch. Can i recommend adopting a rabbit? We adopted ours one year ago from the long island rabbit rescue. There are tons of rabbits waiting to be adopted. Good Luck!

Thank you for your replies!! Very helpful.
I'm thinking we can leave the rabbit in the kitchen with everything in there. Not sure I want it roaming around the apt while we aren't there 
I'm in MD but we do go back to NY alot so I could def. look into the places you recommended.

Sandy my sister had one! He was the cutest and he was litter trained. He was a Holland Lop and looked like this cutie

For my sister's bunny he ate pellets. He also ate carrots. His breed cannot eat greens though. He did enjoy tangerines.
He was allowed to roam around the house when we were home. His cage/crate was always locked when we were gone.
We also used cat litter for his litter box.
His cage/crate was in a corner in the living room because we had the space there. He would follow my sister every where. He was so cute!
