what do you have to do to get the discount? Can you just show them your School ID?

Yup. At least that is what I do and they have never given me a problem.
FYI - J Crew also gives you a 15% discount.

I just got a coupon today for an additional 25% off (on top of the teachers discount). I think I registered on their website. LOFT Loves Teachers

There's a "pass" you're supposed to print out and show at LOFT. I lost that a long time ago, so I just show them my id card and teacher's retirement card. Then they remind me to print out the "pass". We go through the same routine everytime. (This is at Smithhaven Mall).
Kinda sucks though that the teacher discount is NOT applicable to Ann Taylor, only LOFT.
