Dog play biting - please help

Please don't lecture but we haven't been able to get our dog into formal training yet - that will come soon.

In the meantime, how do we break her from play biting? She's 10 months old, not a young puppy anymore, and today I swear I could not tell if she was going to play bite me or just all out bite me, she was so crazy.

I don't know what to do, and I really don't want the behavior to escalate Chat Icon

if she starts to playbite stop playing with her, immediately. Tell her no and walk away. Dont look at her, remove all attention, turn your back to her, etc. The thing with that though is that you have to be 100% consistent so she can realize that biting = no attention

Also - make sure she has plenty to chew on. Rotate the toys every couple of days so she doesnt get bored. And dont give her dog toys that resemble household items like a stuffed animal or an old shoe bc then she won't be able to tell the difference between her toys and your stuff. Praise her anytime you see her chewing her toys.

Re: Dog play biting - please help

we taught our dog "kisses." We put peanut butter on our hand and as she licked it we reinforced by saying kisses over and over. Whever she starts biting, I say kisses and she switches. She does play bite with my husband but he plays rough with her. As soon as it gets too much he walks away and she stops....

Can't take any credit - it was a suggestion from our vet. He also suggested (as a last resort) giving a quick spray of breath freshener in the mouth upon biting

Be careful though! This is how we got our pit-mix to stop play biting. But now she's hellbent on giving kisses. While DH and I don't mind in the least, other people are a little wary of a 75 lb. pit bull barrelling toward them, mouth agape.

With our other dog, we would just reprimand him- tell him no biting and then give him a toy to chew on so he knew he's allowed to chew on that and not us. HTH!

we sprayed bitter apple on our hands and arms when we played with our dog Buddy. We also sprayed it in his mouth too if we needed to.

Re: Dog play biting - please help

When our dog would play bite us sometimes he would get very rough. He would never bite down hard, but he would growl while play biting so we would hold him on his back and say "No" very firmly and "Do nice". He learned very quick who was boss.. Now if he play bites too much all I have to do is say "do nice" and he will switch to kisses instead.

i would make a high pitched squealy "OUCH", which would usually get his attention and he'd stop and look at me, then I'd get him to do something else, like "sit" "down" or whatever and resume playing.

our trainer used bitter apple. We sprayed Dallas's mouth when he bit. It worked & tasted horrible (I tasted it). He is afraid when he sees the bottle alone.

Re: Dog play biting - please help

We were told by our trainer that when he bites while playing to yelp loudly. You will notice in doing so he/she immediately stops and see that it created a bad reaction. This worked very well for us. It all goes back to when the puppy is in his/her pack. When the puppy is playing with a litter mate and bites the mate, the mate lets out a yelp or loud cry in response to the bite. It immediately stops, the behavior following determines whether it happens again.
