1st day of kindergarten activity
Just wondering what everyone does with the children as soon as they walk in on the first day. I was thinking of having a plate with playdoh for them to play or would that be too messy? Would a sheet with their name and crayons and stickers to decorate be better?
How do you handle collecting the supplies? Should I have a large bin and then have them put all of it in there and sort through it later?
Thanks.

Re: 1st day of kindergarten activity
i collected all the supplies from the kids one thing at a time (tissues, then scissors, etc) - its crazy either way and I made it into an i spy game (I spy a green tissue box or if you have a green tissue box, please bring it up...)
i had them draw pictures their first day of what they looked like (made the paper with a border and it said "this is me on the first day of kindergarten Sept. xx, 2010) - then quickly threw them up on the clothesline after I mounted them and it was cute and personalized the room by day 2....i saved the pictures for a scrapbook like thing we made over the course of the year (each month they wrote their name and drew themselves, it got sent home in june )

We do this too! Play Doh is good but may be too early to take out (EVERYTHING in Kindergarten is a management lesson in the beginning) The first few days we have table toys available (blocks, pattern blocks, manipulatives) for morning work. It gives the kids a way to get settled and socialize/share (or practice sharing) with their peers.
ETA: A sheet with their name in crayons will be done in 2 seconds- if that's ok with you, then go for it! I would have a bin and go through it when the kids aren't there.
