Tonight's Phone Call
So back in July I interviewed with a demo lesson at a charter school in the BRonx. It went well.
2 weeks ago I got a rejection letter.
I just got a phone call asking when I can meet with the head of school.
Are you kidding me? 9 pm on a Friday before school starts!
The girl I interviewed with kept apologizing and saying how I must feel about getting that email, etc.
So Monday night I am meeting with the head of school at Starbucks in Manhattan.

That's crazy! Was the rejection letter a mistake? What explanation did they give you?

Re: Tonight's Phone Call
Maybe they hired someone else and it didn't work out and you were next in line. My mother got a job the day after school started 20 years ago . . . she now has the job 20 years later.

Re: Tonight's Phone Call
Jennifer,
It is totally normal! I am still waiting for the CBO to approve the job description for the job I was talking to you about!
A few things could have happened:
1. They could have had a teacher who left yesterday and now they have another opening and you were next in line to get a position at their school
2. Their hire may have backed out.
3. Their enrollment may have gone up and they need another teacher. They may have recognized this only after they finished programming for this year.
Good Luck! I have my fingers crossed for you!

Re: Tonight's Phone Call
Thanks everyone. She just said that they haven't found a candidate and they were impressed with me.
If you were so impressed why did you send me a letter?
The girl I spoke with kept apologizing and saying "I know how you must feel right now". I was so confused.
I think it was because they wanted "urban experience" and I didn't have. Which I don't get. All the city schools want urban experience, but how am I suppose to get any if no one will hire me!
So I am assuming if all goes well with the head of school Monday night - I have a job tuesday. lol This should make for an interesting start of the school year. Completely unprepared!

Re: Tonight's Phone Call
A lot of schools wait until a cple days before. Sometimes they are unsure if they will have the budget until the last minute.
I was hired at the last minute for my first job.
GOOD LUCK..I hope it works out for you

Re: Tonight's Phone Call
I got a call from a DOE high school several years ago on the second day of school! I was very tempted but since I was already teaching in a middle school I was afraid to take the job.
Anyway, good luck!
