My worst nightmare!
My kindergarten son told me last night that he didn't want me to read to him that books are boring!
I had to push him to do the summer reading program at the public library. Did I push too hard? I really only pushed books on topics he asked about or is interested in.
Did I push magic tree house too early? I had dreams of reading a chapter or two a night and reading the whole series together.  I guess I should be happy that he at least likes school!
The kicker - I'm a librarian! How do I win him back to team books?

I would def. ditch the chapter books and get fun picture books. He's only in K. Chapter books may be boring to him without the pics, KWIM?

I agree with getting back to picture books! Take him to the library or bookstore and let HIM pick out a few books (if you can swing it, I'd say go to the bookstore - there's nothing better than a crisp, brand new book that's all your own!  ).

I agree that kids in Kindergarten preferred picture books over chapter books. The students in my class last year would always ask if there were any pics in the chapter I read.
I would wait until 1st or 2nd grade to read chapter books with him.
Take him to the book store and let him pick out his own books and see how it goes from there.

Not a teacher - just a mom here. I clicked on the wrong board
I have to ask - are the books boring? While my daughter loves any book - even the lower level reading books (although she hates reading), my son needs action adventure.
I've read everything from Pippi Longstocking to most recently the Lightening Thief series.
One thing my husband did that sparked a lot of reading was he bought my son Batman/Spiderman/Superman comic books.

Books on tape! Have him pop it in the cd player or cassette player and just lie down and visualize. You can have him draw a picture of his favorite scence. You can have him follow along with the actual book ... you can do it together. Take turns reading - you, the cd, him! Whatever works.

I would use picture books. I think he's a little young for chapter books. I would try to find books he is interested in and try to make it a nice bedtime tradition. Good luck!

My DD went through a phase at either 3 or 4 (can't remember exactly) where she refused to be read to! I was so upset and tried and tried, but I remember it clearly and I was so worried and it seemed to go on for a while. She was just not interested in books for some reason.
But, she ended up reading on her own at exactly 5.5 and went up in levels quite quickly by the end of kingergarten! So, all I can say is don't worry just keep exposing him to picture books, books on CD, vary it up, maybe magazines, catalogs, as long as print is around?

I'd go for silly picture books - things like Dav Pilkey's Cat Kong & Dogzilla, Nick Ward's Please Don't Eat the Teacher, maybe some stories by Robert Munch - silly picture books always seem to capture & engage even reluctant story listeners.
Chapter books can be very boring if a child hasn't developed the skill of visualizing the story. I teach first & usually don't start chapter books as read-alouds until the middle or end of the year, depending upon my class.
