We were only there for a day but the beaches are great, and people love the zoo although I didn't - Bronx is much better imo. Also if you take any road trips, we loved going to the missions....especially San Juan Capistrano.

La Jolla and Pacific Beach are just a few miles north of San Diego. They're great for the beach and walking around -- lots of stores and restaurants.
The gaslamp quarter of San Diego itself is also nice.
Skip Old Town!
